Double British Rally Champion Jonny Milner will be one of the star attractions on the forthcoming Trackrod Rally Yorkshire. The local ace from Huggate is a former winner of the event, and cannot wait to compete in his beloved North Yorkshire forests once more on October 7th.The Team Merlin International star currently leads the Mitsubishi Evolution Challenge, and with all hope of lifting the Tesco 99 British Rally Championship virtually gone, Milner is keen to score maximum points for the one make series in his MSR Motorsport run Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. The Tom Walkinshaw Group built car is backed by Merlin International, Pirelli Tyres and Team Dynamics Alloy Wheels, and together with co-driver Nicky Beech, Milner endured a tough Ulster Rally recently. Milner battled with a seemingly down on power engine to finish third in the Mitsubishi standings.Since then, the Mitsubishi has returned to the MSR Motorsport workshops in North Yorkshire for a thorough check over. Now in full gravel specification once more, the car is all set to contest some of the illustrious North Yorkshire forest stages. Famous names like Dalby, Langdale, Cropton and Gale Rigg will provide a high speed gravel challenge for Milner and Beech. Despite the 'home' advantage, the local favourite knows that the pressure is on to maintain his lead in the hotly contested Evo Challenge. The John Bean Garage Equipment, Snap On Diagnostics, Goldline Bearings, NGK Spark Plugs, Sparco, and Ferodo Competition Brake Pads backed Mitsubishi will have stiff opposition in the form of another former British Rally Champion, Gwyndaf Evans. Together with team mate Stuart Jones, the all Welsh team have been a constant thorn in Milner's side this year, and looking ahead to the day long battle in Yorkshire, Jonny sees no reason for that changing:"Local advantage is one thing, but Gwyndaf has been competing far longer than me, so he'll know these stages every bit as well as I do' quipped Milner. 'More to the point, Gwyndaf is a crafty competitor and he knows how to win events. Nicky and myself know that we'll need to be on our game if we are to beat the rest of the Evo Challenge competition on the day. You need to be ultra committed in Yorkshire due to the high speed of the stages, so we've got to hit the ground running this time. We've had an up and down year so far, but when things have gone well, we've been right at the sharp end of the pace. I always feel comfortable competing in Yorkshire as it is my home patch, but I don't think it will be the advantage it is cracked up to be. Everyone will be going hard to win, and that most certainly includes us. I'd very much like to win the event outright, and there is no reason why we cannot do that if all goes well on the day. The opposition is tough, but we know we have a strong package with Team Merlin International, so I've every confidence that we can do well."Milner's record in Yorkshire is certainly one of a former champion. Jonny won the rally and his first ever BRC crown back in 2002, capping a magnificent season of success with his Toyota Corolla WRC. Milner would again lift the title on home soil the following year, and with plenty of vociferous support likely for the ever popular Yorkshireman in Pickering this year, Milner will certainly be keen to remind the home fans of his championship winning pedigree next weekend.
