Legends - Morton Wins World title
UK Legends Cars ace Peter Morton has won the 2006 World Championship this weekend at Infineon Raceay (formerly Sears Point) after taking on over 130 of the best cars and drivers from around the world. Peter's win was the crowning glory for the visiting UK team who have also regained the Transatlantic Team Trophy. Jamie Clarke maintained his 100% record of podium finishes in the Pro World Final with second place (a personal best) whilst the remaining Brits also performed well (Dave Newsham was 4th, Derek Pierce 6th, Chris Grieve 9th and Simon Belcher 10th). The youngest driver in the team, Lawrence Davey, won his second heat but retired from the final whilst Jamie's dad, Jim Clarke, also finished in the top ten of the Masters. The championship included more than 130 drivers, with drivers from all the American States that host Legends racing along with drivers from Canada, Scandinavia and Europe. This year also saw the strongest ever contingent from mainland Europe with representatives from the Spanish championship joining those from Belgium and France. The UK team’s strong performance meant that in addition to Peter’s World Championship Trophy plus Clarke and Newsham’s trophies (the USA scene has first to fourth on the podium), the team regained the Transatlantic Trophy, winning it for the third time in its’ four year history.“This is fantastic,” said Peter Morton. “To compete in a World Championship, and it’s a genuine World Championship, is a real buzz but to win is something else. This is for my wife Jacqui and son Jamie.”
