British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Rising Star Jeremy Metcalfe produced a stunning fight-back during the eighth round of the 2008 Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk, Sunday, 8th June – the Hampshire racer climbing from 15th position to a richly deserved seventh place finish at the chequered flag.With team-mate Luke Hines taking the first stint in the pair’s CR Scuderia Ferrari 430 during the one-hour endurance encounter, he climbed from eighth on the grid to sixth position at the start and looked in good shape early on.Following a Safety Car period with around 10 minutes of the race having elapsed, Hines continued and the duo appeared on course to, at the least, consolidate their third place in the driver standings which was achieved with a terrific podium finish on Saturday.Just prior to his pit-stop to hand the car over to Jeremy though, Hines received contact from the Ferrari of Adam Wilcox at the final corner as the latter moved off line to negotiate a slower GT4 Class car. Resulting in both cars spinning, Hines pitted down in 15th place.Rejoining the track in a lowly 19th position, several cars ahead still yet to pit, any hope of points looked as though they had long since departed. Jeremy was in inspired form once again though and mounted a superb fight-back to bring the car home in seventh position – an outstanding effort by the 20-year-old British GT rookie.Making tremendous inroads throughout his stint in the car, the Fleet ace had climbed into the top eight by lap 33 and remained there for the next 11 laps as the Team RPM Dodge Viper ahead proved too powerful on the straights. Remaining on the case, Jeremy managed to pressure his rival into a mistake with a couple of minutes remaining and gladly took seventh place as the Viper ran wide out of Coram Curve.Scoring points in all of the last six races, Jeremy has been improving with every outing and has shown consistently good pace and battled hard with great determination when the chips are down.Reflecting on round eight, Jeremy said: “The car felt good and we were able to put in some very fast lap times. It’s a shame that Luke had the spin as that ruined our race really. I also got stuck behind a Viper for a long time which didn’t help but we’re pleased we got the podium finish on Saturday.”There is now a three week break in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship calendar before the ninth and 10th rounds of the campaign at Jeremy’s home track, Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire, on 28th/29th June.In the meantime, highlights of the fifth and sixth rounds of the season – which took place at Rockingham in Northamptonshire a fortnight ago – will be screened on Channel 4 during the early hours of Wednesday morning, 11th June, at 02.40.
