Van der Garde back in P1

Hungaroring – Race 1

Giedo Van der Garde (P1 Motorsport) is back again with a win at the end of a colourful race. The leader of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series held off pressure from Julien Jousse (Tech 1 Racing) right to the finish. Fabio Carbone (Ultimate Signature) finished third, to become the fourteenth different driver to mount the podium in just eight races!

Taking advantage of the reverse grid, Charles Pic (Tech 1 Racing) started in pole position ahead of Alexandre Marsoin (Epsilon Euskadi), Giedo Van der Garde and Alvaro Barba (Prema Powerteam). Marsoin made the best start, as Charles Pic span his wheels, letting Van der Garde through. Barba was fourth, ahead of Jousse and Marcos Martinez (Pons Racing). In the main field, Robert Wickens (Carlin Motorsport) made a mistake and retired.

Julien Jousse, seventh on the grid, made a very good start when he overtook Barba and began to gain on teammate Charles Pic. After three laps, the safety car was brought out while the cars of Salvador Duran (Interwetten.com) and Aleix Alcaraz (Pons Racing) were cleared from the track. Marsoin held his ground against Van der Garde, Pic, Jousse and Martinez who had taken Barba.

The front four pulled away, but the safety car came out once more after Esteban Guerrieri (Ultimate Signature) crashed out.

Alexandre Marsoin was once again defending the top spot, while Julien Jousse took advantage of teammate Charles Pic. Martinez also took the opportunity to get past him. Behind them Alvaro Barba and Miguel Molina clashed. In trying to get away, Barba collided with Mario Romancini. The safety car had its third outing of the race. At the same time, the race leader Alexandre Marsoin, was handed a ‘drive through' penalty for his false start.

Giedo Van der Garde replaced him ten laps from the finish ahead of Julien Jousse, Marcos Martinez, Fabio Carbone (Ultimate Signature) and Bertrand Baguette (International Draco). Charles Pic came off worst from the maneuver, slipping back to fifteenth place after he went off.

In third place, Marcos Martinez span out, handing third place on the podium to Fabio Carbone. At the end of the race, Jousse beat the lap record and closed the gap with Van der Garde. However, the Dutchman held him off, to take his fourth win of the season ahead of Jousse and Carbone.

Giedo Van der Garde: «We've worked hard to make the car consistent in races. I made a very good start and then I made the most of Marsoin's penalty. It's a good result. Tomorrow it will be equally wide open!»

Julien Jousse: «I wasn't expecting to finish on the podium, it's a good result for my championship prospects. The race with Charles was in fair, after that I caught up with Giedo but he didn't make the slightest error.»

Fabio Carbone: »Our team started from scratch this year. Everything was new, so we needed a little time to get things right. We've also been unlucky. You need to be patient. It has started to pay off today. I can't wait for tomorrow's race, as I'm starting in pole position!»
