Herron Selected For Porsche Scholarship

Northern Ireland’s Andrew Herron is celebrating  after being named one of six finalists – from more than 50 applicants – for the inaugural Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholarship Programme.The Dromore based 20-year-old, who has made no secret of his desire to graduate to Porsche Carrera Cup GB in 2009, will take part in a two-day evaluation next week at the Porsche Driving Experience Centre at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.Getting behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer on the venue’s 1.64-mile National Circuit as part of the assessment, Andrew cannot wait to show what he’s capable of during, what will be, his first ever experience of a rear-wheel drive racing car.Following the evaluation procedure, Porsche GB will then make an announcement before the end of October naming which two drivers will be selected to receive a sum of £50,000 each to go towards their season budget for the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup GB.“I’m obviously delighted to have been chosen by Porsche GB to be one of the six finalists for the scholarship”, said the Co. Down ace, “It’s a fantastic opportunity and I intend to grab the chance with both hands. I’m the only finalist without experience of rear-wheel drive but I’ve got as good a chance as anybody.“My goal for 2009 is to graduate to Porsche Carrera Cup GB so winning £50,000 towards the budget would be incredible. It’s sure to be an exciting and enjoyable couple of days at Silverstone, I’m really looking forward to it.”Making his car racing debut less than two years ago in the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup, Andrew immediately marked himself out as one of the UK’s most talented and promising young saloon car drivers. Ending his maiden season ninth overall, he went on to become Vice-Champion of that’s year’s Clio Cup winter series and also took his maiden win too.Stepping up to the SEAT Cupra Championship for the 2008 season, Andrew solidified his glowing reputation by taking five podiums – four second places and one third – on his way to fifth position in the driver standings.The Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholarship Programme evaluations will take place on Tuesday, 21st October, and Wednesday, 22nd October, at Silverstone.
