Hillspeed Looking Strong

FOR WINTER FINALE AFTER POSITIVE TESTFront-running Formula Renault UK Winter Championship squad Hillspeed is looking forward to a successful conclusion to the four-round series at Rockingham tomorrow, Saturday, 8th November, after a promising test at the Northamptonshire track today. While both Menasheh Idafar and Michael Lyons will be looking to secure a brace of consistently strong finishes in the headline UK Class during the final two races, James Theodore will be aiming to wrap-up the BARC Class title which he leads heading into tomorrow’s action by 12 points.British-born Bahraini Idafar was the Derbyshire team’s best placed driver at the end of today’s three sessions with a time of 1m 16.630 seconds (91.54mph) during the third and final run, just over a second shy of the outright pace.Essex teenager Lyons, meanwhile, produced a best time of 1m 17.725 seconds (90.25mph) in session three. Where Idafar did use new tyres but missed out on the performance advantage due to traffic, 17-year-old Lyons elected to remain on older rubber throughout the day so his times were expectedly slower.Car racing rookie Theodore impressed once again in his BARC machine and in the dry final session he lapped in 1m 18.197 seconds (89.70mph), on old tyres, to end the day some six 10ths of a second clear of chief BARC rival Kourosh Khani.Today’s first two sessions were affected by the weather and multiple stoppages. In the first, competitors were faced with a fully wet track while in session two a drying line did start to appear but times were still some 10 seconds shy of the eventual pace produced in session three.“All in all it was a good day and puts us in a strong position for the weekend”, said team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “Menasheh ran consistently in the top five until all of the front-runners took fresh rubber but on his new tyre run he just couldn’t find the space and got held-up by traffic which compromised his final times.“We’re confident we’ve got a very good dry weather set-up for Rockingham and if the weather is with us tomorrow, we should be in a position to do well. Mick achieved everything he set out to during the test, he’s put all of the foundations down using old tyres and I’m fully expecting him to qualify and race well on Saturday.”Ollerenshaw added: “James proved his pace again and was the quickest of the BARC runners even though he didn’t use new tyres. It was a very good performance from him and he’s certainly well placed to seal the BARC title.”Rounds three and four, the final of the Formula Renault UK Winter Championship, will take place at Rockingham tomorrow, Saturday, 8th November. Qualifying is set to begin at 09.20 with race one following at around 11.20 and race two scheduled to get underway at approximately 14.20.Provisional 2008 Formula Renault UK Winter Series Standings (after Rd2)15th Michael Lyons, 13pts; 16th Menasheh Idafar, 12ptsProvisional 2008 Formula Renault BARC Winter Series Standings (after Rd2)1st James Theodore, 28pts; 2nd Kourosh Khani, 16pts; 3rd Henrique Baptista, 12pts
