AT MACAU
Globe-trotting Surrey racing driver Ollie Millroy has arrived in Macau, just a few days after returning to the UK from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to race as a guest driver in the last round of the Formula BMW Pacific Championship. The race on Sunday supports the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, which is held annually in November on the streets of Macau, in front of an expected 40,000 spectators.
The BMW junior development driver and MSA race elite academy driver will be looking to continue his success with Kent based Motaworld racing, following his win and second place finish with them, in the Formula 1 support races, at Shanghai and Singapore.
Because of its tight corners, narrowness and uncompromising crash barriers the Macau circuit is famously known as one of the most demanding circuits in the world and attracts some of the best young drivers from many different countries. Previous winners of the Formula 3 Grand Prix include Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.
“This would be a great race to win and a perfect opportunity to learn another circuit,” says Ollie. “I don’t really believe in luck but it’s going to be one of those weekends that, because of the nature and narrowness of the circuit, if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, anything can happen. It will be even more important to qualify well here because the nearer the front I am the more chance I have of avoiding trouble. If someone goes off in front of you here it can cause all sorts of problems, most of all from behind”.
“The two previous races I’ve had with Motaworld Racing have produced some great results and because the car is good I have been able to concentrate more on my technique. I have done a lot of ‘homework’ learning this circuit and although I know there is nothing like the real thing, what I’ve done will definitely help. With the help and advise the team are giving me and knowing they are pushing for me, it has given me the opportunity to get the results I knew I was capable of and hopefully we can keep going forward and do the same again this coming weekend”.
