Amery expands to 3-car clio cup squad

Cheshire-based Amery Motorsport begins its third season in ELF Renault Clio Cup with a three-car team, setting its sights on a first race win in the summer championship and a title challenge. David Shepherd (Sandbach) remains with the team for a third year and is joined by Darren Wilson (Newark) and Dave Newsham (Inverness), both of whom raced with the team in the 2008 ELF Renault Clio Winter Cup.

David Shepherd is established in the team, having raced alongside his dad, Jonathan, in the last two seasons. He has had top-six finishes in both of his Clio Cup seasons to date, finishing 18th overall in 2007 and 22nd last season. The 23-year-old visual effects artist is aiming for more consistency in 2009 enabling him to bid for a top-10 finish overall.

Dave Newsham, 41, made an immediate impact with Amery Motorsport when he made the switch from Legends racing to compete in the final two rounds of the 2008 season at Brands Hatch. Qualifying third on the grid, he took a podium in round 19, the team's first in Clio Cup racing. He went on to win the fourth round of the 2008 Clio Winter Cup at Rockingham, holding off intense pressure from Árón Smith (Rathfarnham).

Darren Wilson is the least experienced racer of the trio, having begun racing in 2004 in the 750MC Stock Hatch Championship where he finished ninth in 2007. The 42-year-old accountant has Clio Cup experience after competing in the 2008 Clio Winter Cup and will use the knowledge of the team's driver coach, former Clio Cup podium finisher Stephen Colbert, to improve throughout the season.

Rounds one and two of the ELF Renault Clio Cup take place in support of the British Touring Car Championship on 4th/5th April at Brands Hatch Indy circuit. Official collective testing takes place at Silverstone National circuit on Tuesday, 24th March.
