(SPEEDWAY 1)

LAKESIDE will have a striking new-look when they take to the track for their Elite League campaign this year.The Hammers have gone retro with their new race suits worn for the first time at practice in mid-week.Team Owner Stuart Douglas said: "We wanted to mark the 80th anniversary of league racing with a retro design based on the kit of the West Ham team that were pioneers in 1929."

 FORMER Elite League title winner Martin Smolinski will be in the shop window when he rides at Billy Hamill's Farewell meeting on March 22.Smolinski is the final name to be added to the list for the event which takes place at Wolverhampton.Said Hamill: "Martin was a massive favourite at Coventry and I'm sure he will be looking to remind promoters of his ability when he rides in my meeting."

COVENTRY have added Joel Parsons to their squad as a doubling-up rider with Adam Roynon on the long-term injury list.Parsons will be racing in the Premier League for Sheffield but jumped at the chance of also joining the Elite League outfit.He said: "I feel for Adam and I hope he has a speedy and full recovery, but the opportunity is there for me and I'm excited about it."

NEWCASTLE are hoping to attract new spectators to speedway when they stage a special charity practice event on Sunday (2pm).A nominal 80p fee will be charged at the start of the club's 80th anniversary season, and all aspects of the sport will be explained.Co-promoter Darryl Illingworth said: "We want to make the day a fun and informative one as we look to introduce people to the sport."

NEWPORT return to racing this Sunday following nearly a year out of the sport after the death of former promoter Tim Stone.Stone will be remembered at the Prince of Wales Trophy meeting, which startsat 1pm to enable supporters to also travel to Swindon's major event later inthe day. Wasps co-promoter Nick Mallett said: "What better way to say thank-you to Tim than by assembling the strongest-ever line-up."
