Driver of Weekend Al Harthy Takes Second Pro-Am 1 Win

Oman Air Racing Team star Ahmad Al Harthy secured his second Pro-Am 1 race win of the season at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit this afternoon, Sunday, 2nd October, during round 17 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship - a fantastic drive also netting him the 'Driver of the Weekend' accolade. After taking his 10th podium of the year on Saturday, the 30-year-old was eager to keep the momentum rolling heading into today's 17-lap race and he did just that to consolidate third in the Pro-Am 1 standings and move to within 14 points of second place with just two races left to run.Beginning the encounter third in Pro-Am 1, Ahmad made one of his customary excellent starts and moved ahead of Rory Butcher before the first corner, Paddock Hill Bend, to take second. From there, he had to soak up huge pressure but the Muscat driver didn't put a wheel wrong as he produced an inch-perfect race. From mid-distance, as was the case during the first race of the weekend, Ahmad was able to start pulling clear of Butcher. Then, on lap 12, Pro-Am 1 leader Jonas Gelzinis suffered a puncture which enabled Ahmad to sweep past into first position.Pushing on to continue increasing his advantage over Butcher, the Oman Air, Nawras, National Bank of Oman, Brand Oman, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Ministry of Tourism-backed racer steadily did just that and ended the 17th round of the season 1.2 seconds clear to take his second victory of 2011."The heat today was so difficult to contend with", said Ahmad, "It affected the car worse than it did yesterday but we put together a textbook race - I'm extremely delighted for everybody involved in making this possible."It's so important to get these wins, it lifts the confidence and I'm really happy we were able to do it in such a hot and difficult race. It really has been a fantastic couple of days for the Oman Air Racing Team and being named the Driver of the Weekend is the icing on the cake."With just two races remaining in the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship, which will take place at Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire two weeks from now on 15th/16th October, Ahmad is in a great position to achieve his aim of a top three Pro-Am 1 finish but he is still fighting hard to try and overturn Butcher for second. As during this weekend's action at Brands Hatch, Ahmad will compete at Silverstone in support of the Omani National Association for Cancer Awareness - helping to promote the eighth annual NACA 'Walkathon' which will take place in the Al Khuwair area of Oman on Tuesday, 25th October.Provisional 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship 'Pro-Am 1' Standings (after Rd17):Champion: Jonas Gelzinis, 168pts; 2nd Rory Butcher, 97pts; 3rd Ahmad Al Harthy, 83pts
