Two-time Indy 500 winner Wheldon remembered on 2012 race ticket‏

The fighting spirit and infectious passion of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon will be remembered by all Race Day ticket holders for the 96th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on Sunday, May 27, as the 2012 ticket features Wheldon celebrating his unforgettable victory in 2011.

The colorful ticket is designed around a picture of Wheldon pouring the traditional winner’s drink of milk over his head in Victory Lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with his car crossing the famous Yard of Bricks in the background. The 2012 Indianapolis 500 logo also is featured prominently on the ticket, which was designed by IMS Creative Services.

Wheldon earned his second Indianapolis 500 victory last May when he passed leader JR Hildebrand on the final straightaway of the race after Hildebrand crashed in Turn 4. It was the only lap Wheldon led during the race in the No. 98 William Rast-Curb/Big Machine car fielded by Bryan Herta Autosport with Curb/Agajanian.

The stirring victory ignited a celebration at IMS that will be remembered for generations. One of the highlights was Wheldon kissing the Yard of Bricks repeatedly and then laying on the Yard of Bricks on his back, with arms and feet in the air in pure joy over his unlikely victory, which came in his first start of the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season.

“Winning the Indianapolis 500 was a dream of Dan’s since he started racing, and he was proud to represent the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 after he won it the first time in 2005,” said Susie Wheldon, Dan Wheldon’s wife. “But winning it the second time, in such dramatic fashion with a new team, was something Dan cherished so deeply because he really appreciated another chance to compete at the race that meant more to him than any other.”
