Charlie Robertson wins during season opener at Brands Hatch

Charlie Robertson made a winning start to the 2012 Ginetta Junior Championship during the first event of the season at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on Sunday, 1st April – victory in round two coming as the perfect response to being robbed of earlier race one glory by a highly unfortunate puncture.Setting the pace throughout testing and practice, the 15-year-old HHC Motorsport driver headed into qualifying on Saturday, 31st March, as a shoe-in for a brace of front-row starts which he achieved with second on the grid for round one and pole position for Sunday’s live televised race.Making a great start to Sunday morning’s first encounter, the Investigo and Ria Capital Markets supported youngster out-dragged the pole-sitter and took the lead brilliantly around the outside heading into the daunting right-hander, Paddock Hill Bend. Maintaining the lead comfortably, despite being under serious pressure, on lap five the Safety Car was deployed due to the Whyteleafe racer’s team-mate running off the circuit at Clark Curve. With everything in control, as Charlie prepared for the re-start towards the end of lap seven he noticed something amiss with the rear of the car and pitted with, what turned out to be, a puncture.Rejoining a lap down, robbed of a potential win, the MSA Academy racer lit-up the timing screens and posted the fastest lap of 54.320 seconds (80.05mph) on the 13th tour to beat his existing lap record from last year.  In the end, Charlie finished in 12th position to accrue some much-needed points which could prove crucial come the end of the season.Hungrier than ever to return to the top step of the podium in race two, Charlie led away from pole and from mid-distance he steadily increased his advantage to an eventual winning margin of almost three seconds at the end of 14 untroubled laps. Never looking under any serious threat, the Caterham School pupil confidently secured his deserved first win of the campaign to make amends for the earlier disappointment. Although just missing out on another fastest lap, by a mere 0.1 seconds, his lap record from round one remained intact. “Winning the second race was the perfect way to bounce back from the puncture in race one”, said Charlie, “It’s always great to win, we should have had the double here this weekend but I’m just focused now on getting some more wins over the next few races.“The car was brilliant, it didn’t go off at all and the guys at HHC did a great job for me – I’d really like to thank Charlie and Jody at the team for their hard work. It’s also great to start the year with a win for Investigo and Ria Capital Markets, without their support I wouldn’t be here.”Concluding the first weekend of the season third in the driver standings, Charlie will be aiming to achieve more silverware at Donington Park National Circuit next time out – two weeks from now on 14th/15th April – the scene of his maiden car racing podium in 2011.2012 Ginetta Junior Championship Driver Standings (after Rd2):3rd Charlie Robertson, 46pts
