The Lotus Cup UK and Elise Trophy seasons got underway at Silverstone on 15-16 April, supporting the FIA Formula Two Championship and provided three closely-fought contests, characterised by packed grids.A huge Elise Trophy field of 43 cars qualified for the two Saturday races, with many new faces joining the regulars. Former MX5 racer Rob Boston provided the biggest upset, taking pole position by more than a second from Steve Quick. With battles all around the Grand Prix circuit, the lead was fiercely disputed, with most of the top ten in contention. Boston led for much of the first race but a move by Quick in the dying moments handed him his first victory of the year. Despite a reverse top ten grid for race two, the key protagonists from race one conspired to create another thrilling contest, with the tables turned when late leader Quick endured a big moment at Abbey on the final lap, giving Boston the win.In Lotus Cup UK, James Barclay joined Rob Fenn in the Go Green Motorsport Elise to challenge the new Martin Donnelly/Steve Williams Evora. Poleman Adrian Hall only lasted a few laps and with Donnelly at the wheel for the first stint, the V6 held a handy lead in the early stages. However a brief rain spell just before the pit window opened closed the gap, with Barclay taking the lead as he handed over to Fenn. Williams was unable to provide an answer to the leader's pace and by the flag the deficit was over 30 seconds.2-Eleven leader Steve Train took third place late on and challenged for second on a spellbinding final lap, taking the place as Williams had his hands full of Simon Deacon's 2-Eleven, eventually salvaging third place. Boston added to his Elise Trophy victory by setting the Production class pace but a pitstop outside the window handed the win to defending champion Steve Quick.
