Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Daniel Lloyd secured his second series podium in as many race weekends during round four at Donington Park National Circuit today, Sunday, 15th April, with a fantastic third place finish – all achieved thanks to a breathtaking last lap pass at the daunting Craner Curves.Following on from a difficult third round earlier in the day, where the Huddersfield racer was forced to battle back to an eighth place finish after being pushed wide into the gravel at the first corner on lap one, Daniel made good progress from the third row of the grid in the second race with a star drive.Moving into fifth off the start, the 20-year-old Team Parker Racing driver initially pressured team-mate Richard Plant during the early stages but wasn’t able to run the sort of pace he wanted until the final third of the 23 lapper.As the performance of the cars of team-mates Plant and Sam Tordoff started to plateaux, so Daniel was able to reel them back in with some consistently strong laps. With just three laps remaining, the TNT Post, TSD, Creechurch Private Wealth, Propack and TPA Yorkshire-backed driver had reduced the gap to nothing and on lap 22 at Redgate the first opportunity presented itself.Under serious pressure, Plant ran wide under braking for the corner enabling Daniel to move through into fourth place and he then set about pressuring Tordoff for the coveted podium spot. Shadowing his team-mate into the chicane, as the pair exited the final corner to enter the last lap Daniel had much better drive and pulled alongside Tordoff on the run to Redgate.Cutting back to the inside on the exit, and dropping down an extra gear to get better punch out of the corner, Daniel moved back alongside Tordoff through Hollywood and produced a sensational pass at the top of Craner Curves to grab third and a richly deserved second career podium in Porsche GB.“What an awesome race”, said the Yorkshire Patron, “It was difficult to start with as the car took quite a while to come on. Over the first few laps I dropped back a bit, I did make a couple of mistakes as well and made it hard for myself, but suddenly halfway through the race I was able to start moving forward more again – my car didn’t really improve but everyone else started to drop off.“Sam [Tordoff] and Richard [Plant] were a chunk ahead of me, I thought I wasn’t going to catch them, but I kept going and then saw they started battling. I took advantage of Richard’s lock-up into Redgate and then when Sam went defensive there on the last lap, I shifted down an extra gear and had mega acceleration when I went for the cut-through on the exit. It was a great move, fantastic!”During the pre-event test on Thursday, 12th April, Daniel topped the timesheets for the first time in his debut season in Porsche with an outstanding performance. Unfortunately, a repeat of that form in qualifying on Saturday, 14th April, wasn’t possible due to an imbalance on the car but he still salvaged eighth on the grid for round three – just 0.4 seconds shy of pole position – and sixth for round four.The first of the weekend’s two races started badly for Daniel when he was forced out wide into the gravel at Redgate and although dropping to 15th place, he mounted a strong recovery to take eighth position. Added to his round four podium, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar has moved up to equal fifth in the championship standings with four races of the scheduled 20 completed.“All weekend we wanted two strong podium results, especially after testing went so well”, reflected Daniel, “It didn’t go our way unfortunately but we fought back, like we did at Brands in the first round, and hopefully that shows I’ve got good character and I’m willing to fight for it when things are tough.
