Williams F1 and King and Co Win Gold at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Williams F1 is pleased to announce that its display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, ‘The Williams Story’, has been awarded the coveted gold medal.

Designed by seasoned Chelsea exhibitors King and Co, the display tells the story of the Williams F1 Team from its origins in 1977 to the present day. At the heart of the display is a life sized topiary model of a Formula One car, complete with a topiary pit crew. ‘The Williams Story’ is completed with numerous artefacts including a helmet, steering wheel, body work, and tyres to bring the topiary scene to life and further immerse the viewer into the world of Formula One. The display was unveiled to the world’s media yesterday afternoon, with Williams F1 Founder and Team Principal Sir Frank Williams in attendance.

The gold medal is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon exhibitors at one of the world’s most prestigious horticultural events. The display received full marks in all three of the judging categories: scale of endeavour, overall impression, and excellence in plants. The topiary was constructed over a three year period using Ligustrum delavayenum, a fast growing, compact evergreen plant which originates from Southwest China. It includes the flowing forms of Acer palmatum "Ryusen" emerging from the sets of tyres, a symbol of Williams’ commitment to green technology. A distinctive blue banner sits behind the topiary car and serves as a visual timeline depicting the history of Williams F1 over the past 35 years.

Speaking about the success Paul King, owner of King and Co, commented: ‘’Winning the gold medal with a maximum score is the pinnacle for any exhibitor so we are all ecstatic. There was a lot of pressure to get this right given the high profile subject matter, and I would like to thank everyone at Williams F1 for their hard work and dedication in getting the display completed. I have been a lifelong fan of the Williams F1 Team and Sir Frank Williams is a personal inspiration to me, so to win a gold medal with them makes this all the more special.’’

Founder and Team Principal of the Williams F1 Team, Sir Frank Williams, added: “Winning the gold medal is a fantastic achievement and I would like to thank King and Co for their hard work in constructing such a unique and memorable display. I saw it for the first time yesterday and was taken aback by its scale and attention to detail. The Chelsea Flower Show is a uniquely British occasion and to be successful at this illustrious event is a great honour. I hope the public enjoy the display as much as the judges.’’
