Grand Prix winner and BBC F1 commentator David Coulthard has gone back to his racing roots to sample one of the new EcoBoost Formula Ford chassis. DC, who last raced a Formula Ford in 1989, took his chance to turn back the clock at Brands Hatch to help promote the MSA’s Go Motorsport initiative.

Coulthard’s laps in Cavan Corcoran’s EcoBoost Mygale were filmed by the BBC and will be shown tomorrow, Saturday, as part of the build-up to qualifying for the European Grand Prix. It is hoped that his demonstration laps will inspire young Grand Prix viewers to learn how they can take up motor racing at a junior level - ideally in one of the new Formula Fords.

He was enthusiastic about the car: “I was a bit nervous at first because I didn’t know the car, but it felt good - just like a Formula Ford. It’s a great formula.”

Sam Roach of championship promoter RacingLine said: “It meant a great deal to everyone, and in particular to the car’s regular driver, Cavan, to see David so obviously enjoying his experience in a modern-era Formula Ford chassis. It will make a great feature on the BBC’s F1 show and will hopefully be a big boost to Go Motorsport and to Formula Ford.”

The BBC’s qualifying show from Valencia starts at 1210 on BBC1.
