BTCC Independents Points Return Belcher's Target At Croft‏

Simon Belcher heads to Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire next weekend, 28th/29th June, striving for a return to the Independents Trophy points placings when the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship makes its annual visit to the North East.Resuming his maiden season in the UK’s biggest motor racing series a fortnight ago at Oulton Park, where the event acted largely as a test outing for his rebuilt Toyota Avensis which had been almost destroyed in a monumental accident at Thruxton in early May, the Handy Motorsport driver posted three consistent race finishes but is now targeting much more.Unfortunate set-up troubles, which were compounded in qualifying by power steering failure, did blight the fourth race meeting of the BTCC campaign for the 40-year-old but he was importantly able to put vital mileage on, what was effectively, a brand new car.Having made good progress between the first two events of the year at Brands Hatch and Donington Park, culminating in his first Independents Trophy points score in round six, Belcher is determined to get back to that level of performance at Croft and, ultimately, progress even further.“We didn’t have much choice at Oulton other than to use the weekend as a way of bedding the car back in”, said the KÄRCHER-supported driver, “I’d hoped to break into the top 20 but the steering issue in qualifying put us firmly on the back-foot, so after that it was about getting as much mileage under our belts as we could and then trying to post three finishes – which we managed to do.“The aim has to be to get back in the Independents points at Croft, hopefully we managed to iron out any issues at Oulton and now we can focus on getting back to the sort of progress we made at Donington. I’m really looking forward to Croft, I really want to end the first half of the season on a high and go into the summer break with our best results yet.”As well as his pursuit for points in the Independents Trophy for drivers, Belcher is equally focused on scoring as heavily as possible at Croft in the Team Trophy where Handy Motorsport is currently tied for 15th place.Having scored in all three races at Brands Hatch and the subsequent trio of contests at Donington, the now notorious Thruxton weekend impacted the squad’s standing. Points in each of the Oulton Park races, though, enabled the team to get back on track, within just eight points of 14th position.Free practice for the fifth event of the BTCC season will take place at 09.30 and 12.00 on Saturday, 28th June, with qualifying following at 15.45. On Sunday, 29th June, round 13 will get underway at approximately 12.00 with round 14 starting at 14.40 and round 15 getting underway at 17.05 – all three encounters will be screened live on ITV4, ITV4 HD and streamed at www.itv.com/btccProvisional 2014 Dunlop MSA BTCC ‘Independents Trophy’ standings (after Rd12):23rd Simon Belcher, 2ptsProvisional 2014 Dunlop MSA BTCC ‘Independents Team Trophy’ standings (after Rd12):=15th Handy Motorsport & Laser Tools Racing, 27pts
