Nürburgring Preview
Fresh from the Spa-Francorchamps round, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 is moving on to another F1 venue in Nrburgring, a technical track where several drivers will all be looking to knock championship leader Carlos Sainz Jr off his perch, among them Will Stevens, Robin Frijns, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Riberas, and Javier Tarancon. Having won half the seasons races so far, Carlos Sainz Jr (Koiranen Motorsport) is on top of both the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 NEC standings, and now has his sights sets on cementing his lead at Nurburgring.
Hoping to unseat the Spanish rookie in Germany are a posse of contenders led by the UKs Will Stevens (Fortec Motorsport), the winner of race two at Motorland Aragn and currently second in the Eurocup. Though he has yet to hear the Dutch national anthem sound this season, Robin Frijns (Josef Kaufmann Racing) has been picking up points on a regular basis and lies third, three points behind Stevens.
Boosting his hopes of claiming a welcome win at Nrburgring and strengthening his championship bid is the fact that his team will be racing on their home track. Tucked in behind the leading trio is the young Russian Daniil Kvyat (Koiranen Motorsport).
The Red Bull Racing driver was a winner at Spain and is now an outside shot for the title, as is Spains Alex Riberas (Epic Racing), who completes the current top five.
Another potential race winner in Germany is Javier Tarancn (Tech 1 Racing), who recently chalked up two Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS victories on the streets of Pau in France.
The 18-year-old Spaniard, a member of the Gravity stable, is understandably brimming with confidence. Yann Zimmer (Arta Engineering) and Paul-Loup Chatin (Tech 1 Racing), who lie second and fourth respectively in the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS series, will also be out to get themselves noticed in a field that will feature nearly 40 cars.
Out in front in the team standings are Koiranen Motorsport, with Fortec Motorsport and Josef Kaufmann Racing trailing in their wake. Meanwhile, reigning champions Tech 1 Racing will need a strong showing in Germany if they are to move into contention.
