James Kellett continued his dominance of the 2015 Ginetta GT5 Challenge at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit over the weekend, 30th/31st May, by claiming a perfect hat-trick of race wins – increasing his already impressive championship lead to 44 points for Total Control Racing. In both dry and wet conditions, Kellett had the measure of everyone to take his tally of victories for the year to seven from nine races. Team-mate Callum Pointon, meanwhile, bagged a brace of podiums to consolidate third in the championship while TCR’s third driver Ian Robinson chalked-up a best result of sixth in the wet eighth round on Sunday morning.“It’s been a mega weekend for James, three wins and extending the lead in the championship is just about as good as it gets – he’s been outstanding”, said Lee Brookes, team boss of the Wednesbury squad, “We’re pleased to see Callum taking a couple of podiums as well, he was a bit unlucky in race two but overall it’s been another very strong weekend for him.”Kellett got his weekend off to the perfect start in qualifying by claiming yet another pole position for round seven, but he was run very close by Pointon who ended the session just 0.070 seconds shy of his team-mate. Robinson, meanwhile, was an excellent seventh fastest. Saturday’s race was red flagged almost as soon as it had begun due to a multi-car incident so Kellett and Pointon, who each made great getaways, had it all to do again. The re-started contest took place over just five racing laps and Kellett was never challenged, getting away from pole position perfectly he held the lead from team-mate Pointon and went on to secure his fifth victory of the year. Pointon managed to stay within roughly one second of Kellett to deliver a terrific TCR one-two but for Robinson the second start didn’t work in his favour. After dropping down to 28th position after an excursion, he did make an astonishing recovery and carved his way through into the top 15 during the remaining four laps with a tremendous drive. On second best qualifying times, to set the grid for round eight, Pointon bagged pole position after shading Kellett by a mere 0.031 seconds while Robinson was seventh again. Following overnight rain, Sunday morning’s race got underway on a very tricky wet track and Kellett made the best start from the front row to leap-frog pole-sitter Pointon and grab the lead on the run into Copse. Worse was to follow for Pointon when a spin at Luffield dropped him to sixth, but he did battle back into the top four in double-quick time where he ultimately finished. Kellett, revelling in the wet conditions, absolutely obliterated the opposition and went on to take his second win of the event by a huge 6.7 seconds while Robinson ran in eighth until the closing stages when he leapt up into sixth. For round nine, Kellett lined-up on pole and although maintaining an advantage into Copse at the start he was edged back to second on the run to Maggots by Ollie Chadwick. Into Becketts, though, Chadwick went wide and Kellett happily shot back past into the lead which he held all the way to the finish on lap seven. Chadwick did mount a late bid, but the TCR racer had everything in control. Pointon made it back onto the podium in third place, having been in contention for the runner-up spot for most of the race. Although set to start in fourth, an excursion for a rival on the formation lap meant Pointon would effectively be third on the grid and after Chadwick’s excursion on lap one the TCR racer moved into second. Maintaining the place under big pressure, Pointon had some respite mid-race as the group behind squabbled but on the penultimate lap Chadwick managed to nudge him back to third – Pointon’s sixth podium of the season. Sadly for Robinson, hopes of a repeat top six result were dashed on lap four when a spin at the exit of Copse, while running in seventh place, led to hard contact with the barriers on the inside and an unsurprising retirement with front-end damage. He slipped to 10th in the championship as a result.“It’s a real shame the way Ian’s weekend ended”, added Brookes, “In the first race he did a fantastic job to climb through into the top 15 and in the wet race another top six was a great result. It could easily have been the same in the third race, just really unfortunate with the spin.” Next on the Ginetta GT5 Challenge calendar is the annual visit to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium for rounds 10, 11 and 12 of the season on Friday, 10th July, and Saturday, 11th July. Next weekend, 6th/7th June, Pointon will make his debut in the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup for TCR at Oulton Park in Cheshire where the squad’s Ginetta Junior outfit will also be back in action.Provisional 2015 Ginetta GT5 Challenge Standings (after Rd9): 1st James Kellett, 282pts; 3rd Callum Pointon, 221pts; 10th Ian Robinson, 91pts
