The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is widely considered to be one of the most dominant race cars in the history of automobile racing, so dominant in fact it effectively caused the collapse of the FIA GT Championship in 1998.
Chassis 011 was the final V12 CLK GTR built and the last to win a race, as driven by FIA GT Champion Bernd Schneider in partnership with future Formula 1 ace Mark Webber.
1998 SILVERSTONE 500 KM - 1ST
Mercedes AMG first used 011 in two test sessions at Jerez and Oschersleben before fielding her for Round 1 of the 1998 season back at Oschersleben. From the opening laps, it was clear that the CLK GTRs hadn’t missed a beat over the winter break, and despite a Porsche clinching pole, the sister CLK won the race with 011 coming third.
For Round 2 at Silverstone, 011 started 5th on the grid but once she had taken the lead, the crack team of Webber and Schneider showed no signs of relinquishing their position thanks to the Mercedes’ bullet-proof reliability. Silverstone would in fact be the last victory for the V12 CLK GTRs as the V8-powered CLK LMs were fielded for the remainder of the season.
POST-MERCEDES AMG WORKS
011 was retired from racing and kept by Mercedes until 2001 when she entered into notable private ownership. In 2016, 011 was recommisioned by ex-Williams F1 Senior Engineer and HWA (AMG) consultant Tim Preston and his expert team at Cars International Service. Since restoration, she has appeared at demonstrations and events including the Supercar Driver Secret Meet at Donington in 2022 and the BPR/FIA GT Class at Pebble Beach.
COMPETITIVE ENDURANCE RACING LEGENDS ENTRY
A stalwart of the infamous late 1990s GT1 era, this Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR is a highly original, works-run, race-winning, expertly recommissioned example of perhaps the greatest GT racing car of all. Eminently eligible for Le Mans Classic and Peter Auto's Endurance Racing Legends Series, 011 is sure to be the crown jewel in any major collection.
