The fifth episode of The Classic Car Show airs tonight on Channel 5 at 7pm and this evening’s programme is once again crammed with great stories, from a land speed record-breaking Bugatti, a classic rally in the Scottish Highlands, a pre-war barn-find and a hot lap in a race-prepared British icon.
But firstly, Quentin Willson gets to play out a classic car enthusiast fantasy, heading to the French Riviera for a meeting with a very special Ferrari – a 246 GT Dino once owned by Rolling Stones guitarist, Keith Richards. Famously named to honour Enzo Ferrari’s son, the compact and lightweight Dino is ideal for the twisty roads above Monaco and thanks to its famous previous owner, it’s certainly got some stories to tell.
Staying in France, Jodie Kidd heads to Montlhéry racing circuit to celebrate the life of one of the most pioneering female racing drivers in history: Hélène Delangle. Competing against some of the most famous racers of the 1930s and setting the Ladies’ Land Speed Record at Montlhéry in a Bugatti Type 35C, Delangle was years ahead of her time. In a fitting tribute, Jodie takes the wheel of an original and highly valuable Bugatti Type 35C at Montlhéry’s 51-degree banked circuit, following in the footsteps of the lady known as ‘The Bugatti Queen’.
At a slightly more sedate pace, Alex Riley takes part in a Regularity Rally through the Scottish Highlands in a 1958 MG A. Competing against over 50 pre-1981 classics, the endurance event is a true test of machine and mathematics. Meanwhile, barn-find expert Chris Routledge uncovers a pre-war Morris 8 Tourer. Once used by the Royal Air Force, this preciously preserved piece of military history sees daylight for the first time in more than thirty years.
Finally, resident racing driver Bruno Senna hits the track in a race-prepared Austin Healey 3000. With a successful competition history in both rallying and racing, all eyes will be on the nimble Healey to see if it can beat the lap time of the brutal Ford Mustang from last week’s show.
