The Model – In the early days of Porsche, new developments were often instituted on a rolling basis, such was the case when the 356A was introduced. Approximately 200 Pre-A roadster bodies had been prepared when the new larger engine was readied for installation, so these Pre-A bodies received the new motor and were sold as 356A Speedsters. These cars were coveted by amateur and professional racers alike and were a common participant in road racing and rally events across the United States, the market that the Speedster had been created specifically for. Stripped on all non-essential occupant comforts, these cars were made to run and run they did. Maintaining a car’s authenticity was of little importance when these cars were new, owner modifications were common, and if the original engine blew up, another would be bolted into place. It was a thrilling and exciting chapter in the world of Porsche and America based racing.

The Car –Our consignor reports that “81114” was sold new in Monterey, California. In 1973, it was spotted at a gas station by Porsche enthusiast Bob Monnastes, who purchased the car from then owner Richard Lyons. Having been set up for racing, Monnastes installed an engine block from a circa 1964 356C. This block was polished and ported, fitted with a set of 912 pistons, a shaved flywheel and balanced crankshaft. Acquired by our consignor in 1975, he took it to the races where it became a veteran of both La Carrera II and II, plus the fist Silver State Rally in northern Nevada. Campaigned in the 1970’s and ‘80’s, this Speedster looks much today like it did when racing. Its history and background are supported through photos, receipts and other documents. Needing only a current safety inspections and a little TLC, 81114 could be your ticket into the wonderful world of vintage racing.
