Britcar Lockie & McCormick at Snetterton

Calum Lockie and Bo McCormick finished a fine second in the recent five-hour Britcar race at Snetterton (22 May). Racing McCormick's Ferrari 360, they had a fantastic run in the demanding race, which is one of the longest on the UK racing calendar. However, before they even lined up for the start of the five-hour race on Sunday afternoon, Lockie and McCormack had contested the 90-minute Britcar race on Saturday."I didn’t get a single clear lap in qualifying," said Lockie, despite posting fourth fastest time in the Ferrari. In the build up the race, changing weather conditions made tyre choice a real gamble and the team opted for cut slicks. However, the rain stayed longer than anticipated and in hindsight, wet tyres was the right choice.Undeterred, McCormack ran the first half of the race on cut slicks. "It was hugely tricky, but Bo did amazingly well to keep it together in those conditions," said Lockie. When Calum took over, the track started to dry out and the race began to come back to them. With around 15 minutes to go, they were up to third place but the weather took a final twist as heavy rain fell in the last 10 minutes of the race."Even down the straight the car was sliding," said Lockie. "The conditions were horrible and I had to just concentrate on keeping the car on the track." In the end, sixth overall and fifth in class was their reward. That result put them sixth on the grid for Sunday's five-hour race. This time, Lockie took the first stint, but the Ferrari was tagged from behind in early traffic. Although he was not aware of the contact, some damage had been done to the rear bodywork and the car was black flagged. Then, confusion amongst race officials cost them time in the pits and more than a lap was lost before Calum could rejoin the race."That put us on the back foot, but I just pushed hard all the time and did about an hour and a half. Bo then drove a fantastic stint and was going quicker than ever before at Snetterton," said Calum. The plan was then for Lockie to complete the race, running around two and a quarter hours, including a third and final fuel stop. "Bo got the car up to fourth place in his stint and then I was absolutely on the limit; I couldn't have gone any quicker!"Once again, some rain affected the closing stages of the race, and having battled into the overall race lead, Calum was unable to fend off the Porsche of Nigel Greensall in the conditions. "Second overall was a really good result for us. The Hargreaves Motorsport team did a brilliant job and the car didn't miss a beat all weekend. Great credit is due to Paul Hargreaves and the crew of Geoff, Richard and Tim."Thanks are due Bo McCormick for making it all possible and to the sponsors, 1st Class Transport of Milton Keynes, Brian James Trailers and Grand Prix Racewear.
