Bratt consolidates class lead
Adderbury’s Will Bratt was one of the star performers in round six of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin on Sunday, meaning the teen sensation continues to lead the B4 Group Graduate Cup class of the country’s premier junior single-seater motor racing series.Having set the 16th fastest time in official testing at the 1.22 mile Kent venue last Thursday, Will was confident of further improvements in qualifying but problems with understeer, and therefore grip, meant his grid position for both of the weekend’s double-header rounds wouldn’t be indicative of his true pace.Nonetheless, the 17-year-old Scorpio Motorsport star produced two mature drives, netting him 19th position overall in round five and 15th position in the sixth round – the latter result particularly impressive as Will made up a full eight places from a lowly grid slot of 23rd position.Speaking on his Brands Hatch weekend, the Oxon ace said: “In the first race it was a struggle as we were realistically slower than the position we were holding on the track due to our set-up problems, so to be able to hold on to 19th position wasn’t a bad result at all. Through Clearways I had a lot of understeer and so this cost me speed up the start/finish straight.“My plan for the second race was to get a better start and I managed to achieve that, which I was very happy with. We did make a couple of changes to the car which gave me a bit more grip and so I was able to get on terms with some of the quicker guys, even though I had to start from so far back.“Understeer was still a problem throughout the race but we were definitely faster than in round five. I think to move up to 15th position from 23rd on the grid was pretty good going and we’re certainly happy with the progress we achieved.”Will’s quickest lap during round five was 45.783 seconds (94.62mph), while in the second of the weekend’s races he managed to shave a full two 10ths of a second off his previous best which. This was compared to the fastest overall race lap of 45.044 seconds (98.00mph) from podium finisher James Jakes. Will Bratt Championship Position:B4 Group Graduate Cup Class – 1st overallFormula Renault UK Championship with Michelin – 16th overall
