White wins three times at Spa
A trio of Michelin Porsche Club Championship wins for Ian White at Spa-Francorchamps over the weekend (June 4/5) has strengthened his grip on the championship title. The annual trip to the fabulous Belgian circuit by the Porsche Club GB offered competitors outstanding track time, with no less than three races. A 45-minute race on Saturday afternoon was followed by a half-hour race on Sunday morning and then a 50-minute race on Sunday afternoon.White always knew that three points-scoring races at Spa would be critical to the outcome of the title race and he went to Belgium determined to rack up a major haul of points. It could scarcely have gone better for the Yeovil racer in his Harvey Racing 3.2 Carrera. With title rival Kevin Harrison (968CS) struggling after an off in qualifying, White won the wet opening race as Mark Lillington (968CS) led the chase. The story was much the same on Sunday morning on a less wet track, while the final race on Sunday afternoon offered Lillington's best chance of unseating White. After a third race-long pursuit, Lillington was only a couple of seconds adrift, having finished all three races well in touch with the flying White. The final class one podium step was shared between Kevin and Richard Harrison.Defending overall champion Richard Lambert claimed a clean sweep of class two wins in his Carrera 3. Twice Tom Segrue (944S2) ran home second to Lambert, but in the third race it was David Botterill (924 Carrera GT) who took second.Meanwhile, Paul Goldman and Ben Demetriou shared the class three wins, with Goldman forced to miss the second and third races when taken unwell. Missing from the results were young chargers Marcus Clutton and Lewis Tootell, who both fell victim to the challenge of Spa and crashed out. Results race one – 14 laps:1 Ian White (3.2 Carrera) 47m13.530s (124.082kph); 2 Mark Lillington (968CS) +3.679s; 3 Richard Lambert (Carrera 3); 4 Tom Segrue (944S2); 5 David Botterill (924 Carrera GT); 6 Colin Ingram (911SC); 7 Graham Howells (911SC); 8 Marcus Carniel (911SC); 9 Richard Harrison (3.2 Carrera); 10 Paul Goldman (911SC).
