Rounds 9 and 10 - Supreme start-finish victory for Buemi.
Starting from pole, Sébastien Buemi (CHE/ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg) claimed a commanding victory on Sunday in the Formula BMW ADAC Championship. At the Automotodrom Brno in the Czech Republic, the 16-year-old Swiss left Rosberg driver Chris van der Drift (NLD/Team Rosberg) and João Urbano (POR/ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg) trailing in the tenth race. Championship leader Nicolas Hülkenberg (Emmerich/Josef Kaufmann Racing) finished fourth. On Saturday, Mücke driver Urbano beat Buemi and Hülkenberg to take first place.
Buemi dominated Sunday's race and crossed the start/finish line on the challenging circuit with a lead of 7.8 seconds. "I'm very happy about my win. In the championship we're all moving closer together again. That makes it exciting," said Buemi. With two laps to go, the battle for the remaining podium places hotted up again. Portuguese driver Urbano tried to get past van der Drift but the New Zealander managed to fend off the attack. "I was concentrating totally on the racing line and was desperate not to make any mistakes," explained the 19-year-old.
"A high-risk overtaking manoeuvre doesn't get you anywhere. That's something I learnt from my first races," says Urbano of the situation. And so the podium finishers at Brno pulled ahead of the rest of the field in the battle for the championship. At the halfway mark of the season, after ten out of 20 races, Hülkenberg leads with 157 points before Buemi (137), van der Drift (93) and Urbano (83). In the Rookie standings, Hülkenberg (200) also occupies the top slot, followed by Martin Ragginger (AUT/ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg, 107) and Sergio Perez Mendoza (MEX/4speed Media, 91).
The only female competitor among the 25 starters, Natacha Gachnang (CHE/Josef Kaufmann Racing), drove into the points twice this weekend. On Saturday the 17-year-old Swiss driver finished sixth, and on Sunday took seventh place.
Jonathan Summerton (USA/Team Rosberg) and Tobias Hegewald (Waldbreitbach/ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg) are making use of the international opportunities offered by Formula BMW. Both of them are contesting four races in Formula BMW USA: on 12th June they will be competing in Montreal/Canada as part of the support programme of the Formula One Grand Prix, and on 19th June they will at the Formula One GP in Indianapolis.Races eleven and twelve of the German Formula BMW ADAC Championship will take place on 25th and 26th June in Oschersleben.
