Top of the Class - Kevin Davies

Whilst young Welsh rally star Kevin Davies may be setting the stages alight in his Nissan Micra Kit Car, its not just in the forests where his talent is being recognised.  Ahead of next weekend's Dukeries Rally, Davies has been awarded the prize of 'Mechanical Trainee of the Year' by Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training (HCT), a work based learning programme that runs in association with Wales's lifelong learning body, ELWa.Davies, a student in Vehicle Mechanics at Aberystwyth, is making headway on his chosen course, and has been rewarded with the title in recognition for his efforts in learning this year.  Its not just in the class room where Davies excels though - he currently leads the Silkolene 1400 National Rally Championship A5 class after a string of excellent performances have netted four straight class wins this year in the Yokohama shod Nissan.Partnered by Emyr Jones, also native to Llandysul, 20 year old Davies has fast become one of the drivers to watch in the ultra competitive series.  Kevin's pace is such that he managed to finish an excellent 2nd in the overall 1400 standings on the recent Red Dragon Rally, based in Swansea.Next is quite a different challenge - the forests where folk legend Robin Hood made his name.  The Dukeries Rally, based in Mansfield, uses the forest stages of Nottinghamshire, including Clipstone and Sherwood forests.  Davies has never visited the stages before, but he is already concentrating on trying to make it five wins from five starts in the Geoff Jones Motorsport prepared Nissan.Backed by EXL Windows and KJ's Eden Tours, Davies finds himself doing well in a whole host of categories in the series, including the Junior Championship and Under 25 series.   Kevin's fast yet totally consistent approach has won him many admirers this season, and the David Harries & Co backed youngster will strive to get the Championship wrapped up as soon as possible this year.Despite being focussed on that goal, Davies is not underestimating his opposition:'With rallying you can never take anything for granted.  As a result I'm just focussing on one rally at a time, and not trying to get ahead of myself.  Red Dragon was a great result for us, and we really enjoyed the day.  It was very testing - slippery conditions and fast flowing sections.  It was certainly hard work.  The Dukeries is known for being quite a sandy surface, with a lot of straights and then junctions at the end of those.  As forest stages go, they seem to be quite unusual in that sense, and quite different to the stages I am getting used to in Wales!  I know that the Micra Kit Car is very stable at high speed as we found out on the North Humberside Stages in Yorkshire, so with that confidence in mind, we can really look forward to next weekend.  With a bit of luck, I hope we can try to make it five from five, but first and foremost we have to concentrate on having a clean run and then we'll go from there'.
