Formula A challengers tie for points

Competition for the prized Super One Formula A crown couldn’t be closer after two rounds at Larkhall yesterday left the championship leaders tied for points.

Jason Parrott (Crowland, Peterbrorough) and Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) took a win each in the two finals at Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, tying for points at the two-thirds stage of the season.

The South Lanarkshire circuit was hit by scorching temperatures on Saturday, followed by heavy rain storms on Sunday morning, but by the Sunday afternoon finals karters in the Group 4/MSA Karting Championships took to the track on slick tyres.

Parrott had the advantage in the first Formula A final, leading the race from green light to the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Christodoulou dropped from his second place grid slot on the opening lap, but quickly re-passed Chris Rogers (Waltham Cross) and reigning Formula A champion Mark Litchfield (Rocester, Staffordshire), who finished the race in third place.

Fortunes were dramatically reversed in the second final, when Jason Parrott went off on the opening lap, rejoining in last place nearly half a lap down. Undeterred, he ran to the end of the race, and although classified 17th, collected enough points to keep in touch with race winner Christodoulou.

David Gregory (Sheffield) claimed second place after passing Mark Litchfield on the third lap. Litchfield later came under pressure from Chris Rogers for third place, put claimed the final podium spot at the end of the 20 lap race.

The battle between Parrott and 2003 JICA champion Christodoulou, is set to intensify when the Renault-backed B4 Group/MSA British Karting Championship goes to Rowrah in Cumbria, on 30th/31st July.

Formula A Provisional Driver Standings:

1st Jason Parrott, 361pts, (3 wins) 2nd Riki Christodoulou, 361pts (2 wins); 3rd Mark Litchfield 350pts; 4th Chris Rogers 337pts; 5th Gary Catt 325pts; 6th Tiffany Chittenden 317pts.
