Two titles settled at Bovy

Spedeworth South  delivered two title races that were as hot as the sun above the Hertfordshire circuit, when the 2.0 Hot Rods blazed around the track for their National Championship and the Superstox contested their British Championship title.

The Superstox were first on the grid with 82, Gary Burch drawing pole in the pre-race selection. As the rubber burned on the clutch start, 60 Ben Majoram swiftly overhauled Burch. A couple of pile ups did not stop the race, but did end the hopes of star driver 376, Steve Jackson, who retired after a fender bending incident on the pit bend. As the race proceeded under the yellow caution flags Marjoram saw his lead narrowed as the cars bunched up.

Upon the green flag Majoram pulled away with the rest of the pack snarling at his back bumper. He commenced to drive an excellent race, keeping the opponents at bay and weaving through the back markers to take the title ahead of 65, Dave Brooks and 136, Pip Williams.

The 2.0 Hot Rods fielded a grid of star drivers for the large crowd of fans who braved the soaring temperature to witness the National Championship. Those who slathered on the factor 50-sun cream were not disappointed. The race settled down to an early fight for the lead between 60, Mark Paffey and 110, Jason Wilkes. Under pressure Paffey went wide and allowed Wilkes though into the lead. He was then overhauled by 43, Paul Wright who was setting a scorching pace around the Bovingdon Raceway.

As the laps ticked down Wright looked like becoming tangled with some back markers, allowing Paffey to close in on the front running car. Wright deftly steered through the slower cars and with his rear view mirror full of Paffey’s car held on for the last five laps to take the title ahead of Paffey and third placed man Jason Wilkes.

Hot action to match the hot weather was the general view of the fans, who were also treated to plenty of fender bending mayhem from the ever-popular Rookie Bangers and a visit from the Grand Prix Midgets.

While Spedeworth South can’ t guarantee another blazing hot day, they can guarantee more blazing action when the Rookie Bangers, Stock Rods, Stock Cars and Lightning Rods take to the track at Bovingdon on July 10th at 1.30pm.
