VRD Racing’s Nikita Bedrin storms to Spa GP3 victory

VRD Racing’s Nikita Bedrin blasted to his third GB3 Championship victory of the season in the second and final contest of the weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.

The championship leader made an immaculate start from pole, put himself out of reach from those behind on the first lap, and simply pulled away to add Spa success to his Silverstone double, with a margin of 6.5 seconds.

While he streaked clear at the front, there was a battle on for the podium with Maxim Rehm, Deagen Fairclough and Martin Molnar running in that order early on.

Rehm was able to pull away slightly and claimed second place, leaving Molnar to put the quick-starting Fairclough under big pressure, and he made a move stick around the outside of Les Combes on lap four.

The Hungarian therefore earned his second podium of the weekend ahead of Fairclough, while Rodin’s race one winner Abbi Pulling withstood a late challenge from VRD’s Patricio Gonzalez.

The Mexican driver had demoted Hitech’s Jin Nakamura to seventh at the same time Molnar made his pass on Fairclough, and then set about closing down on Pulling. He tried a move around the outside of Les Combes on the penultimate lap, and the pair finished nose to tail at the end of the 25 minute contest, and separated by little over a tenth of a second.

Nakamura had to settle for seventh ahead of Xcel’s Lucas Fluxa, with Kirill Kutskov (Elite) and Lewis Gilbert (Arden) completing the top-10.

The GB3 Championship season resumes at the Hungaroring on 4/5 July, with Bedrin enjoying a 27-point lead at the top of the standings after five races.

Race winner Bedrin said: "It was a really good race. I got a really good start, I think that's the most important thing. We've improved from Silverstone and the race starts have been quite good, The pace is always there, so it’s been a really good weekend to be honest.

"I’m really happy, it’s really good points once again, and I'm very happy with the momentum that we're keeping up. The team has done great work so far, from everybody in the team. I'm really proud of everybody and I'm really happy with the work ethic that we have now."
