GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS hit the halfway stage of its 2026 season with its first visit to Japan this year, heading to the incredible Fuji Speedway.

In Saturday’s Race 1, the #37 Phantom Global Racing car of Anthony Liu and Dorian Boccolacci lined up fifth, one place ahead of the championship leading #911 Absolute Racing machine of Huang Ruohan and Alessandro Ghiretti.

Both Liu and Huang performed well in the opening stint, although the two Porsche 911 GT3 R cars were facing success penalties during their pit stops, which put Boccolacci and Ghiretti down the order after the halfway mark.

However, it was the #11 of Lu Wei and Laurin Heinrich that showed the best pace, as, starting from ninth, Wei handed the Origine Motorsport car over to his German teammate in a strong position. Heinrich continued the progress in the final half hour, battling hard to overtake rivals, including an incredible last lap pass to clinch third place.

Ghiretti and Boccolacci remained together for the remainder of the race, crossing the finish line less than a second apart in ninth and tenth respectively.

In the Silver-Am category, Porsche Center Okazaki’s Kiyoshi Uchiyama and Tsubasa Kondo put in a strong performance to claim second in class as the duo continues its strong form in 2026. Guest pairing Kyle Washington and Tom Sargent also showed good pace to take fourth in class on their series debut for Absolute Racing.

Liu Hangcheng and Wang Zhongwei’s excellent season to date in the Am category saw the duo claim a third victory in the #22 Origine Motorsport entry. HZO Fortis Racing by Absolute Racing’s Haziq Zariel Oh and Aaron Lim Say Joon finished fourth on their first appearance of the season, one place ahead of AMAC Motorsport’s Andrew Macpherson and Ben Porter.

In the second race of the weekend, Sargent lined up second on the grid after a superb qualifying session, with Heinrich close behind in third. The Origine Motorsport man would have the better opening turns, getting ahead of Sargent and up into second.

Heinrich continued to look forwards in his first GT World Challenge Asia weekend in two years, pressuring the car in front and eventually taking the lead after an entertaining three-car battle. He then pulled out a gap on his rivals, which allowed Wei to exit the pitlane in the lead despite the team’s success penalty from Saturday, setting excellent lap times as he secured the victory for the duo.

Meanwhile, having started 14th and 15th respectively, Ghiretti and Boccolacci made fantastic early progress. In the #37 car, after Boccolacci had worked his way up to eighth, Liu continued the march forwards, producing some fantastic overtakes to earn second place and a third podium finish of the season, closing the gap to Huang and Ghiretti at the top of the standings, with the Absolute Racing duo only able to clinch sixth.

Hiraoki Nagai and Kazuto Kotaka bounced back from a retirement on Saturday to claim eighth in the Pro-Am category for Porsche Center Okazaki, while their teammates Uchiyama and Kondo once again secured second in the Silver-Am category. Washington and Sargent again showed positive signs, but missed out on the podium by just over a second, claiming fourth.

In the Am category, a penalty for Liu and Wang set them back, although they were still able to claim third, ahead of Oh and Joon in fourth, with Macpherson and Porter crossing the line fifth.

GT World Challenge Asia begins the second half of its season next month, when the series travels to Okayama International Circuit on 29-30 August.
