Born extreme to take the performance of a track-only GT model to the limit. Ferrari unveils the new 296 GT Modificata, a model developed exclusively for track use during the non-competitive events of the Club Competizioni GT programme reserved for Ferrari customers.


Presented during the Ferrari Racing Days event held in Budapest, Hungary, the 296 GT Modificata is a two-seater model to be produced in extremely limited numbers that draws from the experience forged on the track with the 296 GT3 Evo that debuted at the start of the 2026 season, and combines this with the technology and know-how developed not just in racing, but also for the Sports models of the Maranello-based marque. A car that picks up from where the 488 GT Modificata presented in 2020 left off, created to deliver unalloyed driving fun on the track with a V6 engine producing 730 cv (537 kW) at 7,500 rpm, for an astonishing specific power output of 244 cv/l, and sophisticated aerodynamics with a true racing pedigree. 

 

Extreme performance. The key characteristics of the project are clear from the name chosen for this model: the denomination “296” refers to an engine displacement of 2.9 litres and the 6 cylinder architecture, as this is the latest iteration of Ferrari’s 6 cylinder engine family that has successfully powered both production and race models. “Modificata” embodies the essence of special versions developed from an existing model, with bespoke modifications made to take performance to extreme new heights, as these cars are free from the constraints of any technical or motorsports regulations.

 

As a result of the solutions adopted for the new 296 GT Modificata, this car has the potential to lap the Fiorano circuit 3 seconds faster than the 296 GT3 Evo.

 

Engine and transmission. The soul of the 296 GT Modificata is the rear-mid mounted 2,992 cc 120° V6 internal combustion engine that maintains the same architecture and design as the powerplant of the 296 GT3 Evo from which is derived but introduces a number of modifications to maximise performance. These modifications focused in particular on the cranktrain, camshafts, induction line, intercoolers and turbochargers. The turbos share the exterior housing geometry with the units on the 296 GT3 Evo, while the internal components were designed specifically for this application, also drawing from experience gained with the 499P Modificata, the Sport Prototype model created for non-competitive track use by customers. The fuel system has been optimised to cater for the increased flow rate demands of the engine, with the addition of a low pressure pump.

 

The design of the tailpipes developed for this car, on the other hand, is completely new, while regarding the changes made to the transmission, Ferrari’s engineers have introduced new drive ratios for the 6-speed sequential gearbox with carbon clutch to fully exploit the new operating range of the engine of the 296 GT Modificata, maximising performance and fun specifically for non-competitive use on the track.

 

Aerodynamics. Bespoke aero solutions have been developed for two zones in particular: the front, which features a redesigned wing and a specific front bonnet design, and the rear, with an all-new architecture for the wing.

 

The increased engine power demanded a greater capacity to dissipate heat, and this has been achieved with a new front bonnet with a larger main aperture and a specific vane that deflects the hot air exiting from the central front radiator to avoid interference with the lateral intercoolers. The vent near the windscreen base has also been redesigned to optimise the thermal management of the components under the front bonnet.

 

The new front wing or “Slotted Splitter”, as the engineers call it, improves the management of the air flow along the underbody, increasing the car’s overall ability to generate downforce.

 

At the rear, the 296 GT Modificata introduces a rear wing that has been completely revised to both improve aerodynamic performance and ensure that the car maintains the correct aerodynamic balance. Key features of the wing are the new centre pylon, the 5 mm Gurney Flap and the introduction of endplates inspired by the 499P which, as well as serving a structural function, also improve management of the vortices generated by the wing as a result of the overall increase in performance.

 

Extreme performance. The engine of the 296 GT Modificata develops 730 cv (537 kW), a full 130 more than the 296 GT3 Evo - which is subject to the limitations of Balance of Performance regulations - at 7500 rpm. The engine also sets a new benchmark for specific power output of 244 cv/l (179 kW/l).

 

Handling such extraordinary performance in complete safety calls for advanced technical solutions, such as those adopted for the braking system, an evolution of the system employed for the 296 GT3 Evo and 296 GT3 Biposto.

 

The 296 GT Modificata introduced new front discs in steel with upgraded ventilation and, as a result, cooling capacity. A key role in this is also played by the additional air intake in the lower part of the front bumper, which increases the flow of air fed to the braking system and contributes to increasing the capacity of the system itself to dissipate thermal energy. In parallel with this, Ferrari’s engineers also optimised the design of the brake cooling ducts for maximised air flow efficiency.

 

These modifications have increased the thermal management capabilities of the braking system, ensuring more consistent performance, greater reliability and letting the driver exploit the car’s potential even more effectively.

 

The 296 GT Modificata features an ABS system, as does its GT3 counterpart, calibrated to make the performance of the car as accessible as possible for driver of all skill levels, even during prolonged use on circuits that are particularly demanding for the braking system.

 

Two-seater cabin. This car is conceived with two core objectives: to let drivers hone their skills at the wheel but also share the experience with a passenger. The modifications made to the roll bar have made it possible to equip the cabin of the 296 GT Modificata with a second seat, for sharing the dynamic on-board experience with a passenger. The two-seat configuration also lets the driver take part in track days with an instructor for an even more complete driving experience, benefitting from the tips and guidance given by the coach in real time during timed sessions. For improved comfort, the passenger seat has its own dedicated footrest, while the integrated intercom system lets the driver and passenger communicate constantly.

 

Racing DNA. The new Ferrari was conceived to let owners get straight onto the track and take part in the Club Competizioni GT programme organised by the Maranello-based marque. The 296 GT Modificata comes ready equipped with many features only offered as options on the 296 GT3 Evo.

 

Among these are Data Acquisition System - Step 1&2, which includes additional sensors, such as pitot tubes for measuring air speed, damper potentiometers and brake temperature sensors; VideoBox Premium, which records video of the driver during their sessions to help them hone their performance together with their coach; Rear Camera Premium; and the IRTPMS Step 2 tyre pressure and temperature monitoring system. The pack also includes a carbon clutch, professional seat harnesses and the ‘extra fan’ feature, which improves cabin cooling.

 

Personalised content. While the 296 GT Modificata comes generously equipped as standard, owners can personalise it even further with optional features orderable as original equipment. These include the rear radar, which warns the driver of cars approaching from behind at higher speed, and the colour scheme of the livery, which clients can pick from the entire range of colours offered by the Ferrari Design Studio.

 

“Modificata”: history. Much more than just a word, the designation “Modificata” is part of Ferrari’s tradition and embodies a philosophy centred on extreme performance and cutting-edge technology.

 

Over the years, the Maranello-based marque has chosen to create extreme versions of some of its existing race or production models; where these are intended for track use only, as they not bound by the constraints of any technical or motorsports regulations, they can unleash their full potential for performance. However, there have also been a number of road-going “Modificata” models throughout the history of the Prancing Horse.

 

As mentioned before, the 296 GT Modificata continues in the footsteps of the 488 GT Modificata, a car presented in 2020 and conceived for track use only, which embodied the ultimate expression of the technical solutions developed and experience gained with the 488 GT3 and 488 GTE competition models. In 2023, Ferrari unveiled the 499P Modificata, which ushered in the Sport Prototipi Clienti programme created for gentlemen drivers. This was derived from the 499P that raced in the FIA WEC, winning three editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2023-25) and bringing the illustrious Overall Constructors’ and Drivers’ titles (2025) back to Maranello after 53 years.

 

The very first “Modificata” was the 512 M presented in 1970. This was a direct evolution of the 512 S, with a lighter, more powerful V12 engine – producing 610 cv (449 kW) – new heads with 4 valves per cylinder, and sleeker, more aerodynamic bodywork. After its debut on the Zeltweg circuit, the 512 M took part in the Manufacturers’ World Championship in 1971.

 

Ferrari then extended the use of the moniker "Modificata" to certain production models, such as the F512 M of 1994, the 456M GT of 1998, the 575M Maranello of 2002 and, most recently, the Portofino M of 2020, very high-performance models which, however, could also be driven on public roads.

 

Club Competizioni GT. The 296 GT Modificata is intended solely for track day use and participation in the events of the Ferrari Club Competizioni GT, the programme created to offer Ferrari customers an exclusive member-only experience on some of the world’s most prestigious circuits. Purchasing the 296 GT Modificata includes participation in two years – or 12 rounds – of this programme, offering owners the opportunity for a unique experience on a selection of circuits differing in layout and technical characteristics.

 

The 2027 calendar for the Club Competizioni GT programme consists of seven events: Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), Misano Adriatico (Italy), Fuji (Japan), Indianapolis (USA), Paul Ricard (France), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), and the closing event at the Finali Mondiali Ferrari, the venue and dates of which will be announced shortly.
