HEADLINES 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FOR MID-ENGINES SPORTSCARS IN CENTRAL LONDON
St James’s Motoring Spectacle celebrates the revolutionary 1966 design breakthrough that transformed the world of high-performance cars
So much history was made in 1966: England famously won the World Cup; Harold Wilson swept into 10 Downing Street; The Beatles released Revolver; and, arguably most significantly for the automotive world, the first mid-engined production supercar was born.
Sixty years on, that revolutionary moment will be celebrated with a spectacular gathering of pioneering mid-engined cars at the St James’s Motoring Spectacle on Pall Mall in central London on Saturday 31 October.
Headlining the special anniversary display will be the iconic Lamborghini Miura, the groundbreaking supercar that changed the rules of high-performance road-car design by adopting a layout inspired by Formula 1.
Instead of placing its potent V12 engine ahead of the driver, Lamborghini mounted the powerplant transversely behind the passenger compartment, giving the Miura a more balanced chassis and enhanced handling characteristics. This revolutionary configuration went on to become the defining blueprint for generations of high-performance supercars – as verified by many of the latest hypercars and motorsport icons which will also be turning heads on Pall Mall.
The Miura was not only a design sensation but also a performance landmark. When launched, it was the fastest production car in the world, with its combination of breathtaking styling, V12 performance and advanced engineering establishing Lamborghini as a major force in the supercar world.
Visitors to the St James’s Motoring Spectacle, the Royal Automobile Club’s free-to-attend celebration of motoring, will be able to admire one of these legendary Lamborghinis alongside more than 150 other eye-catching automotive exhibits. Pall Mall will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the event, creating a spectacular open-air automotive showcase in the heart of London.
Paying tribute to the 60th anniversary of the mid-engined revolution, the innovative Miura will be joined by three fellow pioneers from 1966 that also adopted the revolutionary engine layout: the Lotus Europa, De Tomaso Mangusta and Unipower GT.
With its strong Formula 1 pedigree and a long-established understanding that a mid-engined configuration was optimal for Grand Prix cars, it was no surprise that Lotus was thinking along similar lines to Lamborghini. The mid-engined Europa followed hot on the Miura’s wheel-tracks, going on sale in European markets before the end of 1966 and bringing the benefits of the configuration to a much more accessible sports car.
The Ford V8-powered De Tomaso Mangusta was the next of the quartet into production, making its debut in 1967. Just over 400 examples were built before the Mangusta was succeeded by the Pantera in 1971.
The fourth member of the special 60th anniversary showcase is something of a Londoner. Powered by a Mini engine, the Unipower GT was a diminutive British specialist sports car that was hand-assembled by Universal Power Drives in Perivale and Park Royal between 1966 and 1970.
The quartet of pioneering 1966 cars have rarely – if ever – been seen together before, making their gathering on Pall Mall one of the many standout automotive attractions at this year’s St James’s Motoring Spectacle.
Moreover, bringing the story right up-to-date, they will be joined by a mouth-watering collection of the latest mid-engined hypercars in the neighbouring Modern Design display. These will include an Aston Martin Valhalla, Ferrari SF90 XX, Maserati MCPURA Cielo and Porsche Carrera GT as well as a Koenigsegg,
Other notable milestones being celebrated include the 50th anniversaries of both the Ford Fiesta, Britain’s best-selling car of all time, and the iconic Golf GTI.
The Royal Automobile Club will also be marking the 140th anniversary of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely regarded as the world’s first production car.
The St James’s Motoring Spectacle is one of the highlights of the Royal Automobile Club’s busy London Motor Week – a week packed with anniversary dinners, awards presentations and the Art of Motoring Exhibition.
RM Sotheby’s London auction is another cornerstone of London Motor Week and has become a major fixture on the UK collector-car calendar. Returning to the exquisite setting of The Peninsula London, the sale stands as one of the country’s leading automotive auctions, renowned for its atmosphere, quality and exceptional consignments.
London Motor Week culminates on Sunday 1 November when more than 400 veteran cars depart Hyde Park at daybreak for the 2026 RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
