Wilds set for rallying debut

Former Grand Prix driver Mike Wilds will make his first foray into rallying on the next round of the Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Manx Historic Rally (28-30 July).Wilds, a helicopter pilot by profession, has recently been teaching Steve Perez to helicopters and was offered the chance to try rallying in the Porsche 911 that Perez took to the 2003 BHRC title.Although he has raced just about every type of car in a 40-year career, including F1 with the BRM team, this will be the first time that Wilds has tackled a rally and he is looking forward to the challenge of the closed-road Isle of Man event. The 1965 Porsche will be tended by XS Racing and backed by VK. "I've never done a rally before, but we'll see how it goes," says Wilds. "I need to approach it with a little bit of caution. It's very different, but I just love motorsport and it's another form of the sport to try!"Wilds was a spectator on the Manx National earlier in the year, having flown Perez to the event. Now, he will see the Manx roads from the driving seat of the Porsche. He will be co-driven by Peter Martin. In the run-up to the event, he will drive the Porsche on the road to get used to the car and hopes to have a test session before starting the recce.]
