Snetterton EERC race report

ACTION APLENTY DURING EERC’S RETURN TO SNETTERTONSnetterton Circuit in Norfolk was the venue for the fifth meeting of the European and Endurance Racing Club’s season on Saturday but with action plenty across its three categories, nobody could have predicted the fall-out from the Britsports race. While the Class 2 BMW E36 M3 of Harry Handkammer and David Leslie took a clear overall victory in the headline Britcar race and Production S1 success went to the Honda Integra of Sean and Michael McInerney, Britsports saw Austin Reynolds and Nick Padmore earn the win in their Radical SR8.But while deserved plaudits went the way of all three pairs of outright race winners, some focus was placed on Britsports competitor Andy Demetriou who was not only excluded from his sixth place finish in the race, he is now prevented from competing at any race meeting until his adjudication with the Motor Sports Association (MSA) has been finalised. The meeting as a whole was excellent, with a particular highlight being the return to winning ways of Handkammer and Leslie in Britcar. Having qualified seventh overall, and in turn taking the Class 2 pole position, the experienced pairing won by over 55 seconds from the Marcos Mantis of Mick Mercer and Richard Fores. Pete Chambers and Mark Sumpter, meanwhile, were the top Class 1 runners with third place overall in their Porsche 996 Cup.Snetterton saw the Britcar debut of Paul Wright and Gavin Kershaw’s Mosler GT3 and after unsurprisingly dominating qualifying, the car unfortunately retired on lap 84. Meanwhile, Henry Firman and Pete Morris took Class 3 honours in their Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.Production S1 was all about the McInerneys and their Class B Honda Integra. After snatching the overall pole position by less than a 10th of a second from the BMW E30 M3 of Nigel Stephens and Mark Smith, Sean and Michael went on to take the win nine seconds clear of Chris Nicolas and Simon Graves in their Honda Integra R.Stephens and Smith ended the race third overall to take the final position on the podium, while Class C victory went once again to the Mazda RX-8 of Natasha Firman and Mark Ticehurst who finished fifth overall. With a three-week break in the EERC calendar, the competitors and teams can now have a bit of a breather before the next rounds of Britcar, Production S1 and Britsports, which take place at Oulton Park Island Circuit on 6th August. This will be the final meeting prior to the incredible Silverstone 24 Hour Race on 9th/10th/11th September on the world-famous Grand Prix Circuit – the first ever time in history the Northamptonshire venue will have hosted a 24 Hour race.Confirmed competitors so far include the likes of Le Mans 24 Hours and DTM ace Peter Dumbreck, GT specialist Martin Short, youngest ever Le Mans prototype podium finisher Adam Sharpe and rock star Chris Rea.Among the support races for the 24 Hour spectacular will be the Britsports and GoldArts cars, the Ferrari Maranello Challenge, the historic MotorRacing Legends and the Dutch Supercar Challenge – the latter’s first ever race in the UK.Tickets for the Silverstone 24 Hour Race, priced at £20, can be purchased by calling 0870 4588200 or via the Silverstone website silverstone-circuit.co.ukCamping facilities will be provided at the nearby Whittlebury Park Golf and Country Club, which backs on to the outside of Copse Corner.
