Fans who braved the extremely wet weather and made the trip to Bovingdon Raceway to see the Superstox Hertfordshire Championship on July 24th were rewarded for packing the thermos and the waterproofs with a storming race for the title.
Most of the day’s racing took part under grey skies and constant rain, making it hard for the cars to put the power down, but as the drivers lined up for the big one of the day the clouds had abated and the sun was attempting to shine.
Wit 30 laps to complete and a drying track the scene was set for a great race. John Saunders #95 was first into the lead while one of the favourites for the title Steve Jackson #376 was involved in massive shunt in the opening seconds of the race. Indeed, the bumpers were being put in at every opportunity with cars spinning out and the lead changing rapidly. Mark Smith #416 was head of the pack when the caution flags came out for a car stranded in a potentially dangerous position.
The Herts title race continued under the caution flag, with the cars in single file as Martin Brooker’s #7 car was removed from the circuit. As the green flag fell again Smith once again led the pack, but Jackson making a recovery from the earlier shunt was making his presence felt and was soon in second position and snapping at Smith’s back bumper.
The two drivers fought it out around the Bovingdon circuit until Jackson made his move and passed Smith on the inside. With 5 laps to go Jackson and Smith began to weave through the back markers where Smith came to grief hooking his car up on the front bumper of Steven Such #40, ending his chance for some silverware.
With the second place man out of the race the hugely experienced Jackson stormed to victory and added the Hertfordshire Champion title to his already bulging CV. Jackson was followed across the line by Dave Pike #454 and Phillip Moore #465.
