Former champion Paul Hughes will make a guest appearance at Brands Hatch on Sunday 31st July. The 1997 and 1998 Champion will race off the back of the grid in car 85 as regular driver Iain Holden is not able to take part on the second day of the double header.
Paul is treating the meeting as a one-off at present. He said "Since racing Legends I've competed in MGs and Clios. At the moment I'm back on 'bikes but Legends have always been a very special part of my CV. My young son was too young to remember my two seasons in Legends so it will be nice for him to see the racing as well. I love Brands Hatch and I'm looking forward to racing in Legends again - Obviously the cars will have changed in the years since I raced but I'll give it a good shot!"
Paul is still one of the most successful drivers the UK formula has seen - he won 30 races from his 81 starts and has a better career race/points average than all the current top drivers.
Assuming they all start their races there will be a few changes in the Legends record books at Brands Hatch...
John Higgins will move ahead of Robin Drysdale in the 'career starts' table to take second place. Higgins will in theory line up for his 185th National Championship race in Sunday's final. Anglesey winner Steve Thompson is just one race behind Higgins so will go third in the table ahead of Drysdale. Sunday's final should see Lawrence Davey make his 150th National championship start whilst Paul Thompson reaches his century in Saturday's final.
It's Peter Morton who has the most starts under his belt - The Yorkshireman has clocked up 310 so far and broke the 40,000 career points barrier at Anglesey. Higgins is expected to notch up his 25,000th point on Saturday whilst he is also edging towards Tick Steward's career wins total of 70 (John Jon has 67 race wins in total).
Of the drivers racing at Brands Paul Hughes is the most successful as he has 12 wins there (including three hat tricks) although he's not raced Legends since 1998 and will be starting all his events off the back of the grid. Steve Thompson also goes well at Brands and has 11 wins whilst messrs Sturt (5), Higgins (5), Morton (3) and Davey (2) have also take victories there.
Last year's round winners were Peter Morton and Jamie Clarke. John Higgins holds the lap record. The Legends Cars will contest four races each day on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July as part of the Motorsport News 50th birthday celebrations.
