Irishman Michael Devaney scored a sensational double victory at the weekend at Nurburgring in Rounds 11 and 12 of the German Formula 3 Cup. These two victory’s mean that the HS Technik driver has now recorded 4 wins from 10 races and has closed the gap to the leader of the championship. The victory’s were all the more special as he only found out the previous Tuesday that he was able to race after struggling to find sufficient sponsorship.
In Race One he Qualified on the Front row beside poleman Peter Elkman but it was Devaney who took the lead into the first corner. From then on he pulled away lap by lap until mid race when Elkman started pushing more. In the Final laps light rain started to fall and Devaney started to drive very cautiously to the chequered flag to take the win.
Race Two on Sunday proved to be much harder work as he suffered a front left puncture with his new tyres on lap 3 in Qualifying. He was forced to switch the tyre with an old one from Saturdays race and struggled with understeer throughout the Qualifying but a great effort saw him set 5th quickest time. As the Lights went green for the race he made a good start and jumped to third out of the first corner. Devaney then immediately piled the pressure on his teamate Martin Hippe and on the 7th lap shot down his inside to take 2nd. He then began to close the small gap to leader Ho-Pin Tung and began a fierce two lap battle with the Chinese driver, he eventually overtook him on the main straight heading into turn 1. Devaney then pulled away to take the chequered flag by 4.2 seconds.
“This is the best weekend of my motoracing career, just last week I was worried I wouldn’t make it to the race due to lack of sponsorship but everything worked out perfectly for us. Race two was one of the best drives of my career and it showed the speed we are now capable of. The team made a great effort and brought some new parts for the race which worked very well. Even though I closed the gap in the championship this weekned we are still a good bit behind after missing the first two races so now I’m just going to focus on scoring as many race wins as possible and then see where we end up in the Championship at the end of the year.
Next Race will take pace in Assen in Holland this Weekend(August 7th) and the Dubliner will aim for another two race victory’s on the track he triumphed on last year.
