Carrera Cup battles goes to Snetterton

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB heads to East Anglia for rounds 13 and 14 at Snetterton over the weekend of 6/7 August. Another pair of races will be critical as the championship contest between Damien Faulkner and Richard Westbrook unfolds.Following the most recent weekend at Mondello Park, the championship has been turned on its head as Faulkner (Team Parker Racing) swept ahead for the first time this season and has suddenly gone 35 points clear of Westbrook (Red Line Racing), who had a nightmare weekend in Ireland. But, with 43 points available each weekend, their fierce battle is likely to run all the way to the final races at Brands Hatch in October and Westbrook is determined to start his fight back at Snetterton. “Snetterton is the home race for me and there will be loads and loads of local support,” says Westbrook. “I grew up in Ipswich and my family is still based in Suffolk.“I absolutely love the circuit. Some people don’t find it that big a challenge, but it really is. It’s difficult to hook up a good lap at Snetterton and it takes a lot of commitment through the Bomb Hole and Coram and when you get it right you get a lovely feeling. It’s very rewarding.”The Westbrook relationship with Snetterton goes back a long way. Richard’s father Tony was a Mini racer in the early 1970s and it was at the circuit that the young Richard made his first steps in competition.“My first ever kart race was at Snetterton when I was nine years old. There used to be a kart circuit opposite the market and that was the only place I raced for the first three years. So it really does feel like home for me. It’s where it all started for me.”Westbrook knows that he has to beat Irish ace Faulkner if he is to start regaining ground in the battle for the championship title. Former touring car champion Tim Harvey (Team RPM) is another front-runner and heads to Snetterton aiming for his first win of 2005, while the same applies to Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing), who is the other member of the leading quartet that has consistently set the pace this season.Adding depth of quality to the field are Red Line Racing's Stephen Shanly, Nigel Rice and Jason Young, who returns to the series after missing Mondello Park. Meanwhile, Steve Clark (Team RPM) will be working to continue his recent excellent form and David Ashburn (Track Speed) will return to the grid as local racer Jeremy Clark makes his Carrera Cup debut in the Porsche Cars with Team Autosport VIP entry. Also on home ground will be Suffolk-based Michael Corridan (Team Parker Racing). After qualifying on Saturday afternoon, both Carrera Cup races will run on Sunday, with the first race scheduled for 10.15am.
