BHRC and HRCR Classic news round-up

News round-up after event six: Conister Trust Manx HistoricWelcome to the second issue of a new post-event news and gossip update for the 2005 Armajaro MSA British Historic Rally Championship and HRCR Classic Stage Rally Challenge.Round six of both series, the Conister Trust Manx Historic Rally (28-30 July) was once again a mighty test for the crews, with horrible weather on Thursday evening and throughout Friday adding to the challenge. Despite that, 37 of the 53 historic starters finished the event, and those that did finish knew they had achieved a fine result.NewsDavid Watkins took his ex-Roger Clark Escort Mk1 (FEV 5H) to the Isle of Man for the first time in its history for the Manx Historic Rally. Watkins now plans to revert the car to Clark’s colours from when he drove the car on the 1970 Circuit of Ireland. As ever, Dave entertained the crowds on the Manx and finished 20th overall, and third in class. As well as the Porsche 911s of Steven Smith and Mike Wilds, XS Racing also tended the Triumph TR7V8 of Michael Pedley on the Manx Historic Rally. The Chesterfield company has recently built up a road rally Mini Cooper for the Pedley brothers as well. The Pedleys had a good learning run in the TR to finish fifth in the Classics, despite having barely driven the car before the start.Rikki Proffitt enlisted the local knowledge of John Skinner to read the pace notes for the Manx Historic Rally. Originally, Rikki wasn’t planning to do the Manx and so his regular co-driver Phill Harrison accepted an offer to partner Guy Woodcock on the international event. When Rikki’s plan changed, Skinner – who often partners Woodcock – was drafted into the Escort Mk1 for the first time. Skinner is clerk of the course for the Manx National Rally each May. Unfortunately, ignition dramas struck on the run out on Friday and they were out, although they later re-appeared as a course car.Matt Pearce contested the Manx Rally as a driver for the first time when he continued his BHRC campaign in his Mini Cooper. A year earlier, Pearce had co-driven Alastair Moffatt’s Peugeot 206 but they retired after a major roll on the Cringle stage. Father and co-driver Dood, meanwhile, was back competing on the island for the first time since 1981 when he co-drove in a Mk2 Escort.Peter Horsburgh and Anthony Preston joined the strong B2 contingent for the event in their Mini Cooper S and delivered an excellent result to win the class against good opposition. They're now considering a trip to Flanders for the next BHRC round.Bob Gibbons is considering a return to a Mk2 Lotus Cortina for the 2006 season. He’s recently acquired a Mk2 for restoration over this winter and could then take the Mk1 RS2000 out on a few more historic road rallies.Liz Jordan co-drove Dick Slaughter in the Classics on the Manx for only second time. Both are residents of Maidstone, but had previously only teamed up for the Swansea Bay rally in 2003. Andrew Street and Jez Mason had a troubled run up to the start of the Manx with their Porsche 911. First of all, they struggled to get the trailer out of a very tight space when leaving a very packed Liverpool ferry. Then, wiring dramas struck at scrutineering and needed some rapid fettling before being passed to start the rally. Unfortunately, more dramas left them OTL at the end of Thursday night’s stages.

Quotes of the weekend“We’d like it to be foggy tonight.” Graham Samuel joins Stephen Smith in wishing for a foggy Thursday night. He got his wish.“I came here for the first time in 1969 in a Ford Anglia!” David Stokes recalls his Manx history.“We’re Isle of Man virgins. We couldn’t see a thing in the fog. If I’d had a guide dog I wouldn’t have been any slower.” Ian Drummond goes in at the deep end.“We nearly had to call out the coastguard.” Peter Lythell has a big moment in Castletown, but survives.“Eyes on stalks in that fog!” Dick Slaughter was glad to get back to Douglas on Thursday night.“We’ve got first(ish), third and fifth.” Stephen Hall reports on his gearbox dramas on Friday afternoon.“The old girl doesn’t deserve this stick.” Stephen Smith comes over all emotional about the Porsche."I have the utmost respect for these guys. I thought I could drive a motorcar, but I never realised just how complex this sport is. I'm gob smacked." Mike Wilds – with 40 years of racing under his belt - on his first experience of rallying."I've just finished the biggest event of my life!" An elated Craig Salter on the finish line of the final stage."Unbelievable! I'm absolutely knackered." Mark Clifford bags second overall in the Classics on the final stage of his first Manx Rally.
