Faulkner’s Carrera Cup double

Damien Faulkner completed a double victory in round 14 of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton today (Sunday, 07 August). While Richard Westbrook battled through from the back of the grid to take second place from Tim Harvey, Faulkner was able to round out a perfect day and extend his championship lead to 56 points. “It’s been a magic weekend; the car was faultless,” said Faulkner. With Westbrook starting from the back of the grid after his exclusion from the opening race, Faulkner led the pack into Riches. Contact from Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing) tipped Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing) into a spin at the first corner and put Rice out with a damaged radiator. The incident meant that Faulkner (Team Parker Racing) and Harvey (Team RPM) now led by a useful margin as Stephen Shanly (Red Line Racing) jumped into third. However, Westbrook was flying up the order and dived through to third at the Esses on the second lap.Westbrook immediately set off after Harvey, but worked his tyres hard in the early laps. “We gambled on the tyre pressures and I gave it my all in the first few laps,” said Westbrook. He quickly closed on Harvey, who was struggling with an ill-handling car. “For some reason it was steering from the rear,” reckoned Harvey, who could not prevent Westbrook taking second at the Esses on lap eight.By now, Faulkner had a lead of around four seconds and, despite pushing hard, Westbrook could not close the gap in the remaining laps. “I knew Richard was going to be going for it,” said Faulkner, who monitored the gap to the flag. Harvey struggled home third, while Templeman earned the driver of the day award for his recovery drive to fourth place after the first lap spin.Once Jason Young (Red Line Racing) spun at Russell when tussling with Steve Clark (Team RPM), the battle for fifth continued as Clark closed in on Shanly. Less than half a second split them at the flag as Shanly held the place. Young fended off a determined David Ashburn (Trackspeed) for seventh as Michael Corridan (Team Parker Racing) completed the field after Jeremy Clark (Porsche Cars with Team Autosport) retired with a blown clutch.Provisional results (16 laps):1 Damien Faulkner (Team Parker Racing)          18m44.822s2 Richard Westbrook (Red Line Racing)                   18m48.752s3 Tim Harvey (Team RPM)                               19m00.837s4 Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing)          19m09.362s5 Stephen Shanly (Red Line Racing)            19m18.907s6 Steve Clark (Team RPM)                               19m19.301s7 Jason Young (Red Line Racing)                      19m30.605s8 David Ashburn (Track Speed)                             19m36.879s9 Michael Corridan (Team Parker Racing)          15 laps
