Bratt Overcome Qualifying Woes
Oxon racer Will Bratt produced a superb drive during the 12th round of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin at Snetterton Circuit, earning a 15th position after qualifying in 22nd place on the grid.Saturday’s pair of 20-minute qualifying sessions, to determine each grid for today’s races at the Norfolk venue, didn’t go according to plan for the Adderbury teenager and after a promising run in pre-event testing, Will hit problems during qualifying which resulted in starting slots of 20th and 22nd for rounds 11 and 12 respectively.Qualifying yet again promoted the competitiveness of the 2005 series, with the top 22 cars in session two covered by just over a second. But with a literal mountain to climb in the brace of races, Will performed admirably and against the odds produced two points-scoring finishes along with some impressive lap times to boot.Round 12 was undoubtedly the Scorpio Motorsport ace’s highlight performance of the weekend and after making a great start, he finished the race a full seven places higher than his starting spot of 22nd on the grid and bagged six valuable points for a hard-earned and well-deserved 15th position.Speaking on the race, Will said: “I made a good start and considering where we qualified on the grid I’m very happy with the result. It wasn’t without difficulty though, as my gear-shift lights in the cockpit failed. It was tough to get the gear change spot-on so we did lose some time each lap.“Without that, who knows, as I’m confident we’d have put in some quicker lap times and potentially achieved a higher finish. It was a satisfying race though, and now we need to try and do a better job in qualifying to give ourselves an improved chance in the next two rounds.”The day’s earlier 11th round saw Will forced into the pits on the opening lap after Bradley Ellis made contact with his car – the second time in as many races the Mark Burdett Motorsport driver had collided with him – leaving damaged bodywork rubbing on Will’s right-rear wheel. While the resulting problem was rectified by the Scorpio Motorsport mechanics, Will went a lap down on the rest of the field and yet rejoined to record a points-scoring finish of 20th position. The real shame of the incident was that Will had made a terrific start to the race, passing several cars, but after rejoining he did set a best lap of 1m 06.279 seconds – comparable almost to the same 100th of a second as the best lap set by double-Croft race winner Alex Storckenfeldt.“I went round the outside of the first two corners and made good progress but then as we went into the Esses, I went down the inside of Niogret (Jean-Robert) but then Ellis (Bradley) drove into the side of my car”, explained Will.“Basically, I had nowhere to go and got sandwiched in between the two cars. It was frustrating as it was a lost opportunity to get some good points, especially as Richard (Keen – B4 Group Graduate Cup leader) didn’t complete the race.”All in all, this weekend has been about damage limitation and to achieve a brace of points-scoring finishes after such a troubled qualifying performance on Saturday Will can be pleased with his results. Now, the Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin competitors prepare themselves for the series’ annual visit north of the border to the demanding Knockhill Circuit near Fife in Scotland.Official testing at Knockhill will take place on Friday, 26th August with qualifying and rounds 13 and 14 to take place over the weekend of Saturday, 27th August, and Sunday, 28th August. Will Bratt Championship Position:B4 Group Graduate Cup Class – 2nd overallFormula Renault UK Championship with Michelin – 16th overall
