F1 in Schools Final

To be hosted by Autospoert International - 14 -15 January 2005NEC, Birmingham

F1  in Schools has chosen Autosport International to showcase their Nationaland International Finals, to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, on 14&15January 2006. Over 30 UK secondary schools, colleges and organised youthgroups will present the exciting results of their engineering expertise inthe two-day event, including a straight-line challenge against the clock intheir completed machines at speeds of up to 80mph.

With the world's motorsport elite looking on, the National Final will takeplace on Saturday, where UK regional finalists will exhibit their portfoliosand manufactured cars. The International Final of F1 in Schools fires up onSunday with teams from around the world representing their nations,competing for the exclusive crown of International Champion.

The F1 in Schools Challenge requires student teams from across the UK tocompete against each other to design and manufacture CO2 powered modelracing cars. Students are required to test their designs before attending aregional final, either in school or at their local manufacturing/test/racecentre, held during November and December 2005. Astonishingly, nearly 500 UKsecondary schools are registered to take part in the regional finals.More...-Page 2 of 2-

Students are given a brief to design a model CO2 powered F1 Car of thefuture using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) package such as Solid Edge. Oncethe cars are designed, they are transferred into CNC (Computer NumericalControl) language using a CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) package such asQuickCAM. Cars are then manufactured on a CNC machine such as the DenfordMicroRouter.

Underlining the importance of British engineering Lord Astor of Hever,President of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), said: "The UK haslong been host to more world-class engineering and technology firms servingthe international motorsport sector than any other country. These supplycutting edge technologies and products to F1 and WRC, and dominate theproduction of race and rally cars and components for use in the top seriesof motorsport, worldwide."
