Spedeworth South got the new Stock Car racing season at Wimbledon off with a bang on Sunday as the 1300cc Stock Cars battled it out for the National Championship, the Rookie Bangers took each other apart in a 4-a-side team racing and the Rookie Rods provided plenty of non-contact racing action.
The first win of the new season went to Stock Car pilot 167, James Morris after an action-packed race that set the scene for the title race for the armoured Stock Cars.
A clutch start got the cars underway and immediately the front bumpers were put in with gusto. Early leader 191, Aaron Morris soon felt the pressure and was put aside as star lady driver 10, Samantha Holland began to make her presence felt. Holland knows her way around the Plough Lane circuit and built up a strong lead.
The fight to overhaul Holland for the lead saw Morris fall prey to the front bumper of 511, Jody Bryant who then set off on a determined mission to catch Holland. As the laps ticked down Bryant realised it was going to take a do or die effort to win and made a last minute attack on Holland in the closing stages of the final lap. The bumpers failed to connect and Holland claimed the title ahead of Bryant in second and 170, Mark Glenister in third. The Stock Rods provided non-contact racing with a final win for 139, Mark Latter ahead of 88, Phil Blackford and 56, Mark Freeman.
More metal bending was on the menu from the Rookie Bangers as the cars were ground to scrap metal in a series of team races won by the aptly named Fantastic Four. To the crowd’s delight Spedeworth staged an addition to the night’s racing in the shape of a last car moving demolition derby. The remaining cars were soon wiped out leaving 752, Tim Belcher to emerge from the carnage as the winner.
There will be more action at Wimbledon Stadium on Bank Holiday Sunday August 28th with the awesome BRISCA F1 Stock Cars National Bangers and Ministox take to the famous Plough Lane circuit.
