Guerrieri jumps to third place in the standings
With two solid fourth place finishes this past weekend, Chris Guerrieri of Pickering, Ontario, drove his Formula Ford Zetec Cooper Tires Championship Series car around the 2.258 mile track in impressive fashion. Starting seventh in the first race at the famed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Guerrieri was able to overtake the sixth and seventh place starters within the first few laps.
During the passing maneuvers on one of the cars a small piece of the body of that car fell and acted as a projectile, lodging itself into the aluminum wing on the front of the Guerrieri #11 Northstar Promotions Cherry Beach Sound Med Broadcast Van Diemen race car. Although it affected the aero package of the car, Guerrieri was still able to hold on to fourth place to finish less than one second behind the third place finisher.
During the second race of the double header weekend trouble with the front wing played into the results again. Going into turn one of the opening lap Guerrieri made a bold move from his fourth place starting position only to be forced into his teammate, Jay Howard, ultimately bending the front wing. With the wing no where near the proper angle to handle the many corners of the track, Guerrieri was once again tasked with driving a crippled car. Lasting the twenty remaining laps Guerrieri was passed by only one other driver who ultimately had to give up the position when Guerrieri put on the pressure in the closing laps and forced his opponent to make and error and spin out in turn one during the last lap. Guerrieri cruised to the finish line with a fourth place finish, solidly putting himself in third place in the driver’s standings out of a field of forty drivers.
