COOPER TAKES SUPERSTOX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT WIMBLEDON STADIUM

Spedeworth South Superstox settled their World Championship at Wimbledon Stadium on Sept 11 in a bruising contest that saw many favourites fall by the wayside before the race was over.

With a grid packed with 30 of the formula’s star drivers all determined to add the most prestigious trophy of the season to their cabinet, the racing was going to be intense from the second the green flag fell and the drivers did not disappoint that expectation.  Steve Jackson, 376 a strongly fancied driver to lift the title roared away from pole position, before a 6 car collision brought the race to a temporary halt.

On the restart Jackson again pulled away from the pack with Pip Williams, 136 chasing hard for second. The Superstox’s heavy front bumpers were put to good use as the drivers jockeyed for position and a hard-charging Jason Cooper, 482, overhauled Williams for 2nd spot.

Jackson, however, looked calm and confident as he built up a solid lead over the rest of the pack. Stock car racing is, however, a sport where fortunes change in a second and the strong running Jackson clipped the fence, smashing his front bumper and slowing him down. As he moved to the inside of the track he was shoved into the centre and out of contention courtesy of Colin Aylward, 51.Cooper seized his chance and powered his car over the line to a popular win ahead of Williams and Aylward. Alas, for Williams his car failed post race scrutineering and he was removed from the result leaving the final standing promoting Aylward to 2nd and Dave Miles Jr, 123 to 3rd.

Fans of metal to metal full contact racing also had the chance to see the Stock Cars settle their ‘ Goldrush’ series with a race that saw defending lady driver Samantha ‘Sam’ Holland show the lads the way around the track in fine style to hold onto the title for another year.

The rapid non-contact 2.0 Hot Rods were also in action, with it all to play for in the final of their ‘Daytona’ racing series. The racing was as intense as ever when these high-powered machines take to Plough Lane with a duel for first between Mark Paffey, 60 and 110 Jason Wilks coming down to the final 4 laps, before Wilks found the gap he needed to take the flag with Paffey right on his rear bumper.

There will be more World Final action when the ground shaking V8 Stock Cars take to the track on Sunday, September 25th at 5pm at Wimbledon Stadium, Britain’s finest stock car racing circuit.
