Bratt matches seasons best

Just two 10ths of a second separated Scorpio Motorsport’s Will Bratt from his first ever Formula Renault UK top 10 finish yesterday, during an action-packed weekend for the Oxon racer at his ‘home’ event on Silverstone’s 1.6-mile National Circuit.Adderbury-based Bratt, who didn’t enjoy the best of qualifying sessions on Saturday, certainly made amends during both of the weekend’s races and especially during round 17 where he finished in 11th position having started 17th on the grid.“I’m really happy with the result”, commented Will. “It’s a shame I couldn’t quite get into 10th position but 11th is a great result for us considering where we started on the grid. I felt pretty confident throughout the race and I think given another couple of laps I would have made it into the top 10.“It was satisfying to beat my team-mate (Peter Rees – finished 13th) too as he out-qualified me quite strongly, but in the race we had much better pace and so it showed with the result.”As the first of the timetabled races, the Formula Renault UK competitors were faced with a greasy track surface following overnight rain. But as has already become apparent during Will’s short car racing career, he displays superb car control in tricky conditions and his opening race of the weekend certainly underlined the fact.By the end of lap one, Will had made his way into a superb 13th position and with the B4 Group Graduate Cup leader Richard Keen having made an error of judgment at Becketts Corner, resulting in his retirement from the race, things looked good for the 17-year-old.Two laps later and Will had progressed into 12th place before starting to pressurise Jason Tahinci ahead of him. On lap 17, Tahinci made an error allowing Will to move up into 11th position and as the end of the 22-lap race neared the prospect of a top 10 finish was plausible as he closed to within two 10ths of a second of Rodolfo Gonzalez. There wasn’t enough time left for Will to attempt a decisive pass but 11th position was, nonetheless, a great result and matched his previous season’s best at Oulton Park Island Circuit during round eight of the season. He also took class victory in the Graduate Cup and set a best race lap of 56.641 seconds.Round 18 took place on a fully dry track and while the race wasn’t quite as exciting as the day’s opener, it still saw Will make good progress initially, moving into 19th position on lap one from 23rd on the grid.Lap two saw Will move into 18th position, by lap five he was up into 17th place, and then on the final lap he moved forward another spot – although tantalisingly close to stealing 15th at the line, a mere four 10ths of a second shy of Tom Kimber-Smith.As during the majority of outings this season, Will’s race pace belies what he’s been able to achieve in qualifying and if he’s able to extract the maximum performance from himself and the car during these sessions at Brands Hatch in a fortnight’s time, Will stands a great chance of signing off the season with his best results of 2005.“We know we have the pace in the races to run with the guys ahead of us, more often than not the lap times I set in race conditions are very close to the front-runners so it’s a question now of getting qualifying right.“If we can start pushing ourselves further up the grid to begin with, I think we can run strongly in the top 10 and that’ll be the aim during the final two races of the season at Brands Hatch. It’ll be tough, the Grand Prix layout will be very demanding, but I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve.”Rounds 19 and 20 of the 2005 Formula Renault UK Championship with Michelin will take place at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit, Kent, on Saturday, 1st October, and Sunday, 2nd October. Will Bratt Championship Position:B4 Group Graduate Cup Class – 2nd overallFormula Renault UK Championship with Michelin – 15th overall
