Bratts promising finale turns sour

Will Bratt’s Formula Renault UK season concluded in frustrating fashion at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit, after the teenage ace saw a potential top eight finish cruelly snatched from his grasp.Having started the 20th and final round of the championship in 10th position, following a very impressive qualifying session on Saturday, the Adderbury teenager made a good getaway and immediately moved into ninth place in the opening lap.By lap two, he was up to eighth position and fending off the attentions of multiple race-winners Alex Storckenfeldt and Patrick Hogan, reigning Formula Renault UK Winter Champion Stuart Hall and Team McLaren Formula One-backed Cheng Congfu.Although struggling somewhat with under-steer on his car, Will coped admirably with the pressure being applied by more experienced drivers like Storckenfeldt and on lap six the Safety Car was deployed to give marshals time to clear up an incident, offering the field an opportunity to bunch up and potentially opening several possible overtaking chances. At the re-start, Will couldn’t quite maintain eighth position but, nonetheless, he was racing well and concentrating on Cheng and Hogan while trying to keep in touch with Storckendfeldt’s faster car which was now ahead of him. With less than half the race remaining, the whole Scorpio Motorsport team realistically thought Will’s first top 10 finish of the season was on the cards but lap 10 was where all the hopes and dreams turned to dust - through no fault of his own.An errant overtaking attempt by Hogan at Surtees resulted in Will being pitched into a spin and by the time he rejoined the circuit, he found himself at the tail end of the field and eventually crossing the line in 19th position – a heartbreaking conclusion to a race, and a season, which promised so much.“That really does just about sum up our year”, commented a frustrated Will following round 20. “I’m annoyed at Hogan for taking me out but I’m equally as bothered about the fact we struggled with under-steer for the majority of the race.“I felt I drove well this weekend yet the end result was as it has been all too often this year. We deserved much more but we must take positives from it, as we always do, and at least we know we genuinely have the pace to run comfortably inside the top 10 on a regular basis.“We have learned an incredible amount in our first year of single-seaters and I’m keen to get back out in the car to show what we’re truly capable of. Hopefully, the upcoming Winter Championship is an option for us but we’ll have to see what budget we’re able to raise over the next few weeks.”The 17-year-old deserves huge credit for his race performances this season. His individual results, final championship position of 15th overall and runner-up placing in the B4 Group Graduate Cup are not at all indicative of the true pace he’s shown throughout the year, which should have seem him placed much higher all things being equal. If there was bad luck to be had, Will unfortunately seemed to be the recipient on more than one occasion but his racecraft and ability has come on in leaps and bounds and he’ll certainly be a force to be reckoned with next year.First though, he’s sure to be a threat in the Formula Renault UK Winter Championship if he elects to compete in the short, two meeting series, which commences on 5th/6th November at the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit and concludes the following weekend at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire. Will Bratt Final 2005 Championship Position:B4 Group Graduate Cup Class – 2nd overallFormula Renault UK Championship with Michelin – 15th overall
