Milner nets triumphant Trackrod return
Double British Rally Champions Jonny Milner and Nicky Beech made a triumphant return to the Kwik-Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship this weekend. Driving an MSR Motorsport run Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, the duo produced a polished performance to take 4th overall and the Production Category victory on the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire. The gosim.com and Team Dynamics backed Yorkshireman from Huggate was making a welcome return to the Championship after taking a year out of the sport. With just one appearance on the Pirelli International Rally and a brief outing on the Galway International Rally in 2005, Milner had been forced to spend most of the year on the sidelines. With three previous seasons of success in the series, the ever popular local ace was trying a hired Production Cup specification car in readiness for a change in regulations to the Championship for 2006.Despite a long absence from the heat of competition, Milner lost little time in settling into the new car, as he and Beech found themselves holding down a strong third in the category, just behind the more advanced works Mitsubishi UK run Lancer Evo 8.5's of David Higgins and Rory Galligan. The Pirelli Tyres and Ferodo supported team were delighted with their progress after three stages, and would set about getting closer to the pace of the works cars over the next loop in the North Yorkshire forests.Milner was happy to trade times with the leading works duo, but he also had to keep an eye on the hard charging Barry Clark behind in a Subaru. Jonny was soon to move into second in the Production category after Galligan hit transmission problems. With Jonny fast getting used to the very unfamiliar Lancer, he was delighted to end the day 2nd in the category, and within touching distance of leader Higgins should he encounter any problems. The second leg of the event began early on Sunday morning, and Milner was flying in the long Givendale 2 stage. Just three seconds separated Higgins from Milner after nearly seventeen miles of intense driving. Jonny was keen to pressurise the works driver as much as he could, and on the very next stage, disaster would strike - for Higgins. The Manxman suffered a broken driveshaft, and Milner found himself leading the Production Cup category with just a handful of stages left.Jonny and Nicky used their championship winning experience to fend off the challenge of Clark over the final stages as they netted a superb 4th overall and a comfortable Production Cup win by forty seconds from the Subaru driver. Jonny was delighted to be back to winning ways:'I've really enjoyed myself this weekend' quipped the Yorkshire ace at the finish. 'The car has been faultless - a real credit to MSR Motorsport who we hired it from. It has been a long time since I last drove a Group N car competitively, so it took a few stages to get used to the driving style again. I found myself braking too late or too early, and as a result we were losing time in places. That said, the Pirelli tyres worked superbly well on the slippery surfaces, and it was good to have a battle with the works Mitsubishi drivers. Both hit transmission problems, but that's rallying - sometimes it goes for you and against you. The main thing was that we were within striking distance should any problems arise, and that was pleasing for me. Overall it has been a good rally, an awful lot to learn, and a big thanks to MSR Motorsport and our sponsors Go Sim, Pirelli, Ferodo and Team Dynamics for making it happen.'Milner is hopeful of a return to the Kwik Fit Pirelli British Rally Championship on a full time basis for 2006. With new rules in force restricting the series to Group N and Super 1600 cars only, Jonny is keen to find the budget to return and aim for a third championship title if possible. More news will be announced in the future.
