Formula One Meets Formula Student

Silverstone, the ‘home’ of Formula One, will become the home of the IMechE Formula Student - Learn to Win - event this weekend (29 and 30 October).

Over 400 students will converge on Silverstone for the event, the first of its kind and run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). It will be a chance for the best of British and International young mechanical engineers to show off their technical and driving skills in a Formula One style racing car they have designed and built from scratch. No mean feat!

Brian Robinson, IMechE FS Manager, said: “Learn to Win will for the first time show students and academics and the media what we are all about and what we are trying to do. FS is a fantastic event that promotes engineering and is much more than tinkering about with a car – we get them to design, build and drive it themselves!”

Learn to Win will be running at Silverstone for the first time to show new students and teams what FS is all about and new members will get to drive around the Silverstone circuit.

FS is the biggest motor sport event of its kind in Europe and is held each year in July. Teams from all over the country will be showing off their cars and showing teams preparing to enter the main event in July 2006 how it’s done.

Hertfordshire University, which won Best UK Team in FS 2005, will be there. Anthony Sale, of Herts, said: “Formula Student is an amazing event for anyone who takes part. Learn to Win will give those that haven’t yet entered a chance to see from experienced teams what it is like – and have a go at driving one of the cars themselves on an F1 circuit.”
